Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction

Elementary Education and Middle School Clusters

The Curriculum and Instruction Master’s Degree Program for elementary education and middle school teachers is designed to enhance teaching and learning through exploration of theoretical principles and practical applications to educational settings. The program is intended for individuals who possess a teaching certificate. The 36 credit program consists of a core of 18 credits that focus on four critical areas embedded in effective teaching: Curriculum and Assessment; effective teaching and leadership; the Learner; and Research. Additional courses in the elementary education and middle school clusters (18 credits) are designed to provide students with a course of study tailored to their personal teaching interests and/or situations. These clusters include elementary school or middle school content, an internship, a research component, and a selection of electives to complete the program’s requirements.

Admission into the Curriculum and Instruction Master’s Program for Elementary Education and Middle School teachers is offered three times during each academic year. Applications are reviewed in September for admission in spring semester, February for admission in the summer sessions, and June for admission in fall semester.

Requirements for admissions are:

  • A bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited college or university.
  • An undergraduate overall grade point average of 3.00. If the GPA is under 3.00 the candidate has the option of taking either the Miller’s Analogy Test or GRE or the candidate may start the program as a provisional student.
  • A completed application submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate/graduate work.
  • A completed questionnaire concerning teaching background and future goals.
  • Three letters of reference
  • An interview and a planning review session with department faculty during which a program plan will be completed.
