Message from the Senate President

Dear Fellow Student,

Welcome to the Ship family! You've begun a great journey into the world of higher education and I want to assure you that Shippensburg University is a fantastic place to be. My name is Ray Ryan and I am President of the Student Association for the 2008-09 school year. As your President, I serve to be a student advocate and to enhance the quality of student life as well as to promote scholarly and friendly environment.

The Student Association is comprised of all undergraduates and is governed by the Student Senate, a group of elected peers who work hard to positively impact all aspects of campus life. The Student Senate at Shippensburg University is entrusted with funds from your activity fee. This year $2.7 million of your money will be allocated to athletics, clubs, student conferences, speakers and much more! Ship has over 100 clubs and organization that are constantly seeking new members, like yourself, who can demonstrate leaderSHIP.

You received a great deal of information at orientation on how to get involved and I strongly encourage you to do so. Feel free to email me at senpres@ship.edu with any questions or come see your senators hard at work in the office located on the third floor of the Ceddia Union Building, also known as the CUB. Ship is great because of the people who are here; we have outstanding faculty, administration, coaches and staff who truly care about the quality of education and student life. Ship is an extremely student-oriented university, and you will find that it’s not unlikely to know a professor or two on a first name basis. My Ship story is unique and I sincerely hope you will make your story proudly your own. I did not visit Ship’s campus before deciding to attend back in 2005, so I went to summer orientation unsure of what to expect. I wasn't very involved with my high school extra curricular activities but I knew I wanted to make an impact during my collegiate years. Therefore, I quickly made a decision my first fall semester when I campaigned and won office for Freshman Class President. I continued to stay strongly involved and now, several years later, I’m writing to you as Student Association President.

My point to you is the following: Whatever paths you have taken, both good and bad, you are now in a brand new place with endless opportunities. I invite you to be great. Seize these next four years and make them yours. You have a blank canvas in front of you; it's up to you to make it a masterpiece.

Sincerely yours,
Raymond R. Ryan Jr.
Student Association President
