Biology First-Year Interest Group

Biology Image 2For first-year biology majors.

Students in the Biology First-Year Interest Group LLC are enrolled in the same section of BIO161 Principles of Biology: Cell Structure and Function (the first course for biology majors), as well as two other General Education courses.

This clustering of courses along with the shared residential experience provides opportunities for students to take part in meaningful extracurricular activities to meet and get to know biology faculty. They can also form study groups and friendships with students who have common academic and social interests.

Students receive a peer mentor, an upper-class student who provides guidance on a number of topics, such as effective studying, time management, and adjusting to college life. Individual mentoring groups typically meet weekly for a non-credit seminar led by the peer mentor and often features presentations on different campus resources that can help students succeed.

In addition, Residence Life staff and others across campus offer social and academic events throughout the semester.

At this time Honors Program students are unable to be a part of this LLC as many of the resources are available to them.
