Welcome to the D2L Brightspace Information Page
D2L Brightspace is a Learning Management System (LMS). Simply put, it allows you to manage online elements of your course. It includes a content viewer, quizzes, submission folder, grades area, discussion boards, and more. Faculty can use Brightspace for completely online courses, hybrid courses, and to supplement their face-to-face courses.

Course Purge - 12/18/17
PASSHE has adopted a System-wide D2L Course Retention Policy, which keeps courses active in the D2L system for three (3) years. After three years, courses will be purged from the Shippensburg Brightspace (formerly called D2L) environment. In accordance with this policy, Shippensburg University will be purging (deleting) all courses from Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 during the week of December 18, 2017. Purged courses will be “gone for good.”
FACULTY WILL NEED TO EXPORT AND SAVE ANY COURSE CONTENT, STUDENT WORK, DATA, AND/OR GRADES FROM THOSE COURSES PRIOR TO DECEMBER 17, 2017. IF YOU DO NOT BACK UP THESE COURSES PRIOR TO DECEMBER 17, 2017, ALL OF THE INFORMATION CONTAINED WITHIN THEM WILL BE GONE FOR GOOD.
Determining Course Shells to be Purged:
Faculty can determine which course shells will be purged by:
1. Logging into D2L (https://d2l.ship.edu).
2. Scrolling down the D2L Home Page to view the “My Courses” Widget.
3. Courses listed under the Summer 2014 and FALL 2014 semesters have “TO BE PURGED:” at the beginning of the course name.
Faculty will need to export and save any course content and/or student work/data they would like to retain from those courses.
Saving Student, Content, and Grade Data:
Faculty who want to save student information from course shells should:
1. Back up student work (Discussions, Dropbox area),
2. Download a copy of your gradebook (Grades area),
3. Export quiz data, and
4. Export (copy) your course shell (Edit Course > Import/Export/Copy Components) to your hard drive (Note: Exporting backs up course content only).
Please visit the Instructional Design and Web Technologies site for more information on the purging process.
Instructional Design and Web Technologies staff is available by appointment to help you. Please send an email IDWT@ship.edu or call x1816 to schedule an appointment.
In practical terms Continuous Delivery means that D2L updates their products (Brightspace Learning Environment, Pulse app, etc) once a month on the third Friday.
In D2L's words, "Continuous Delivery (CD) is a design practice used in software
development to automate and improve the process of software delivery.
The Continuous Delivery model will allow D2L to deliver updated
technology to clients, enabling rapid, incremental delivery of high
quality, valuable new functionality to users. This frictionless model
also makes it possible to increase collaboration with clients and to
adapt software in line with user feedback and needs, resulting in
incremental and easily integrated changes."
Current Continuous Delivery release notes. You can also view previous and forthcoming release notes on this page.
Here is the current schedule of release dates. Unless otherwise noted the updates occur on the third Friday of the month.
The Daylight Experience is the new look and feel for Brightspace that
adapts responsively to different device sizes. Daylight is clean and
easy to use, creating a great first impression with new users. Daylight is currently under development and we are experimenting with it on our test servers. We haven't set a day to switch to the new "Daylight Experience" but it will likely be for the 2018-2019 academic calendar year.
Visit Daylight Central on D2L's website: including more info, updates, FAQ.
