General Rules

We are happy to provide all our services free of charge to all students, faculty, and staff at Shippensburg University. We don’t charge for any use of the lab or equipment, nor for the materials or time used to print something. However, the Makerspace is for learning and is not intended to be used for large-scale production.  Use of the Makerspace is intended for discovery, learning, entertainment and prototyping. Commercial activity is prohibited. No more than 10 copies of a project are allowed. Anything over that number is considered to be commercial activity.

The Makerspace, and our services and equipment are provided “as is”, with no implied warranty or guarantee of availability or use. Our facility is a place of learning and exploration, not a professional production facility.

It is absolutely forbidden to use the Makerspace for the following types of items: Any kind of weapon, weapon-accessory, realistic weapon replica. Any offensive item. Anything that violates copyright or patents. Anything intended to be used for illegal purposes. Anything against the Shippensburg University Code of Conduct 

Report All Injuries

  • Do not attempt to remove foreign objects from the eye or body. 
  • If chemicals get in the eye(s), immediately wash eye(s) for 15 minutes in an open flow of water before proceeding for medical treatment. There is an eye wash station located in the Makerspace workshop, Room 114

Use Protective Gear & Dress Appropriately

  • Wear eye protection when operating equipment. Safety glasses are available in the workshop.
  • Wear clothes that fit properly. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing around moving or rotating machinery. 
  • Remove ties, jewelry, gloves, etc. - especially around moving or rotating machinery. 
  • Tie back or cover long hair, to keep it away from moving machinery. 
  • Wear closed-toe shoes that cover the entire foot, no open-toe shoes or sandals. 
  • Wear suitable gloves when handling hot objects, glass, or sharp-edged items. 
  • Wear appropriate clothing for the project (i.e., do not wear clothing that exposes your bare arms or legs when welding). 

Prepare

  • Safety is your top priority when using the shop. If you are not sure what you are doing, ask.  
  • Know all locations of first aid, fire, and safety equipment.  
  • Never work alone when using power tools. Two people must be present and able to see one another.  
  • Do not work in the shop if tired, in a hurry, or taking medication that may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use sound judgment on your ability to stay alert and focused. 
  • Do not fool around, startle, or distract anyone (not even with conversation) while either one of you is using a tool.  

Use Tools Properly

  • Use tools as they were designed to be used (i.e., a wrench is not a hammer). 
  • Never use a broken tool.  
  • Report broken tools or machines immediately. 
  • Never walk away from a tool that is on.  
  • Operate machines with all required guards and shields in place.

Clean Up

  • Clean up every time you leave an area, including sweeping the floor.  
  • Clean and return all tools to where they belong.  
  • Mop up spills immediately and place a chair or cone over them, if they are wet enough to cause a slip or fall. 

No food or drinks are allowed near any equipment in the lab or the workshop.

Tools, equipment, and resources are not to leave the makerspace unless given permission from the makerspace manager.

We do not allow multiple pieces of equipment to be run simultaneously by a single user. (EX: Printing on more than 1 printer at a time.)

Do not possess or consume alcohol (irrespective of age) or illegal drugs in the space. 

Follow the Shippensburg University Code of Conduct while using the facility and/or its resources.
