Shippensburg University Accounting Student
Receives PCAOB Scholarship

Joseph Kon, a senior majoring in Accounting, has the unique distinction of being the first Shippensburg University student to receive a $10,000 Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Academic Scholarship.  The Accounting faculty at the John L. Grove, College of Business, submitted Kon’s name and qualifications for consideration by the selection committee.  Part of the faculty’s supporting letter stated, “….  Joe agreed to become a tutor for the Accounting Department.  This was one of the best things that could have happened to both Joe and the department.  Very few weeks go by without students making favorable comments about Mr. Kon.  Joe has willingly done anything asked of him by our Department  and has gone out of his way to help any student who comes his way.”

Joseph Kon is from Shermans Dale, PA and has an earned grade point average of 4.0.  Joe has served as an intern for Harshbarger & Company, the Billing and Accounts Receivable Manager for Bekins A-1 Movers and a tutor for SU’s Accounting Department.  Mr. Kon has also been a volunteer tax preparer for Shippensburg’s VITA program.

The scholarship program was created by Congress in 2002 as part of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to encourage students, both undergraduate and graduate, to pursue careers in auditing.  The program is funded by the monetary penalties imposed by the PCAOB in its disciplinary proceedings.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in accounting and demonstrate interest and aptitude in accounting and auditing as well as high ethical standards.  The scholarship can be used for tuition, fees, books and supplies.  This is the PCAOB’s eighth year granting scholarships.
