Shippensburg University's
SIFE Team Goes onto National Competition

Shippensburg, April 23, 2010- The Shippensburg University SIFE team has returned to campus as Regional Champions, for the seventh year in a row.

Every spring, the SU SIFE team organizes a presentation that showcases the projects completed during the year. Projects presented are then judged based on seven different required criteria that need to be satisfied. This year, SU SIFE once again had the opportunity to represent their school and team at the regional competition, where schools in the region compete with each other.

As stated by one judge,  "It was the best presentation of the day in this league."

SIFE began many new projects this year, including Project JumpStart and GreenThumb Initiative. Project JumpStart allows SU SIFE to partner with South Central Services of Pennsylvania to allow individuals with physical and mental disabilities have a place where they can work for short amounts of time in a suitable environment. GreenThumb Initiative was created as a response to the Shippensburg University Greenhouse Gas Emission inventory. The goal of this project is to create a five-year plan to offset the carbon emission on Shippensburg's campus as well as encourage the community to become environmentally responsible.

President Tyler Schmidt states, "I'm very proud of SU SIFE's accomplishment's this year.  Our team's hard work, determination, and dedication have led our SIFE team to win at regional competition for the 7th year in a row.  I look forward to competing at nationals in Minneapolis in May."

Student in Free Enterprise, better known as SIFE, is an international non-profit organization operating in over 40 countries and has over 1,500 schools participating. Students are able to use their knowledge obtained in the classroom and put it to practice with different projects the team implements throughout the year. SIFE also makes it possible for students to grow as responsible, great leaders. Through business concepts, SIFE teams develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. In addition to the community aspect of the program, SIFE's leadership and career initiatives create meaningful opportunities for learning and exchange among the participants as well as the placement of students and alumni with companies in search of emerging talent.

In May, SU SIFE will once again be competing for the chance to be national champions in Minneapolis, MN.
