What Will I Learn?

As a discipline, finance can be classified into six areas:

  1. Corporate financial management
  2. Investments
  3. Financial institutions and markets
  4. Banking and insurance
  5. Personal financial planning
  6. Real estate investment and valuation

This program focuses on the application of finance concepts. Required courses in applied analysis give you a real-world feeling for finance.

Study logoIn addition to two applied courses in market, company and security analysis, you can apply for admission to the Investment Management Program class. In this class, you can utilize your accumulated knowledge and skills in the management of a real investment portfolio.

What are the requirements for this degree?

By the beginning of your sophomore year, you are expected to have access to a personal computer that is compatible with the hardware and software used in the program.

The Finance, B.S.B.A. program requires the completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours in the following areas:

  • General education courses
  • Business core courses
  • Finance courses

The John L. Grove College of Business is internationally accredited by the most prestigious business-accrediting agency, AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Shippensburg University offers small class sizes and plenty of opportunities for one-on-one contact with faculty members. Our faculty has a diverse range of professional backgrounds, including government financial management, personal finance, portfolio analysis and more.

There are a number of clubs you can participate in to learn more about your area of study outside the classroom. Student professional organizations will provide you with a variety of opportunities to develop professional contacts, enhance your course of study with hands-on application and build lasting friendships within the business community. Shippensburg University’s chapter of the Finance Management Association is specifically designed for finance majors, but all College of Business students are welcome to join. The organization is dedicated to educating students on possible career opportunities in the finance industry by:

  • Providing speakers from various types of financial institutions Attending career expos
  • Providing internship information/networking opportunities
  • Assisting in the organization of the annual College of Business Etiquette Dinner
  • Fundraising/planning educational trips

Internships provide great opportunities for on-the-job experience while you gain credits. Internships often turn into job offers for our students.

The Brad E. Hollinger Stock Trading Room on campus also provides you with great experience and a distinct advantage in the job market because you are able to use Bloomberg Terminal, a Wall Street trading platform used by investment bankers and equity traders.
