First-Year Writing Fellow Program

This student success initiative supports all first-year students

The First-Year Writing Fellow Program meets the needs of all first-year students in Introduction to Academic Writing (ENG 113) and Academic Writing (ENG 114).

Overview of how the writing fellows serve first-year students:

  • Writing fellows provide individualized support to students in first-year writing courses; they are paired with ENG 113 courses and will attend class sessions as well as meet with students outside of class to provide support.
  • All first-year writing students (ENG 113 and ENG 114) are required to meet with Writing fellows to review assignments throughout the semester.
  • Writing fellows provide support in one-on-one and group tutoring sessions.
  • Writing fellows provide support and assistance at any stage of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, and revision).
  • Writing fellows host “Tutor Talk” workshops to help first-year writing students. All students across campus are welcome to attend these workshops. Examples of “Tutor Talk” topics include: First Draft Boot Camp; Guide to Thesis Statements; MLA Citation and Formatting; Introductions and Conclusions. All workshops are held in DHC 002 and are advertised across campus.

DHC Writing Lab and Tutoring Rooms

The English Department computer lab is conveniently located in Dauphin Humanities Center (DHC) 002. The lab is open to all students, and it serves all first-year writing courses as it can be reserved by first-year writing faculty for classes and workshops. Writing tutors are available to meet with first-year writing students in DHC 107, 109, and 113.Though the tutors do take walk-ins during their work hours, students are encouraged to schedule an appointment to guarantee a session. Students can schedule an appointment by putting their initials or “reserved” on the sign-up sheet outside DHC 107, 109, or 113.
