The Slate wins national award

Shippensburg University’s student-run newspaper, The Slate, was awarded First Place with Special Merit in this year’s American Scholastic Press Association Annual Review and Contest Awards.

Competing against college newspaper applicants with an enrollment of 2,500 or more, The Slate was one of only five to receive this highest honor.

The First Place with Special Merit designation is awarded to publications  that are “an outstanding overall example of a scholastic publication in format, content and presentation,” according to the ASPA.

Additionally The Slate’s multimedia editor Kayla Brown won the Outstanding Sports Photography award in the Annual Review and Contest Awards.

"I am truly honored to receive this award. I am thankful for the opportunities The Slate has given me," Brown said.

Brown was one of only three students in the country to receive this award. Kayla Brown's award winning photograph of the Shippensburg University football team versus the West Chester University football team
