Placement Testing

About the Placement Tests

At Shippensburg University, our goal is to help you succeed, and part of accomplishing this goal is placing you into courses that develop the skills you need. We will use these results to better determine which courses are best for you.

Writing Survey

The Writing Self-Assessment Placement is 100% online, mobile friendly, and can each be completed in under 20 minutes. 

Reading Placement Survey

The Reading Placement Survey is taken online and consists of four short reading passages and self-reflection questions evaluate your prior reading experiences. The assessment will take approximately 30 minutes or less to complete.

ALEKS Math Placement Test

The online ALEKS Math Placement Test is up to 30 questions and generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete.  

After the initial placement assessment, you will have to option work through the assigned Prep & Learning modules before taking the assessment up to four additional times in order to increase your placement level. 

Accessing the Placement Tests

If you are an incoming student that is required to take a placement test, you will have a checklist item in your Admissions Status portal. If you do not see this checklist item, you are not required to complete any placement activities. To check your placement requirements, login to your MyShip Placement Portal.
