What Types of Service Does Connection Provide??

billiardsBrief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (B.A.S.I.C.S.)

        How it works...

Students are referred either by medical, housing, disciplinary, or self referrals to the Connection program. The BASICS process is a two meeting program that uses a harm reduction approach that aims to motivate students to reduce risky behaviors rather than focus on specific drinking goals.

        Benefits...

  • Increases students' awareness of the risks associated with alcohol and/or other drug use
  • Provides students with information on alcohol and it's effects on the body
  • Fosters safer alcohol use choices
  • Young adults gain increased awaress of alcohol-impaired choices that can lead to health problems, social difficulties, and/or legal problems

AOD Education Series

The AOD Education Series consists of four classes, each approximately two hours in length, designed to educate and inform students of the personal, academic, familial, and societal effects of high risk drinking. The outcome of this education experience is to promote healthy decision-making and to help students develop an understanding of local, state, and federal laws regarding alcohol use. Other drugs are also addressed to create awareness and to promote the well being of students. The total cost is $75 for all four classes.

 Early Intervention Groups

        How it works...

Early Intervention Groups are closed, psychoeducational groups that meet for one hour a week for five weeks. These small groups are co-facilitated by Connection staff members and consist of approximately 5-10 college students that meet the requirements and needs applicable through the BASICS process.

        EIG Groups Can Focus On...

  • The Stages of Change and Developing an Action Plan
  • Risk Factors and Progression of Use
  • Identifying "Triggers" and Managing Stress
  • Peer Pressure and Campus Climate Issues
  • Effective Communication and Refusals
  • Positive ways to Reward Successes
  • Identifying Needs, Social Supports, and Referral Resources

Referrals for Professional Alcohol/Drug Assessments and Treatment

    Professional Assessment...

Some students who either are self-referred or complete the BASICS process and are found to need further assessment and/or needs in addition to the Connection Alcohol and Other Drug Program are referred to receive a professional assessment and, if applicable, treatment. These individuals would complete an assessment with our community professional, Lory Naugle, through Naugle Counseling Services and follow through with recommendations.
