Explore and gain new ideas for supporting international students, build a regional network of colleagues, and
build your professional portfolio.

This one day symposium is designed to showcase innovative models and practices that support the varied needs of international students studying in the United States. It includes concurrent presentations, roundtable discussions focused on particular topics, and networking opportunities designed to foster a sharing of ideas, approaches, and resources across institutions. Individuals involved in supporting international students are invited to attend, submit presentation proposals, and to contribute to a post-symposium online monograph.

Individuals involved in supporting international students should attend to:

  • Explore and gain new ideas for supporting such students
  • Build a regional network of colleagues
  • Build their professional portfolio (through presentations & a post-event monograph)

Presentations and Roundtable Discussions -

Presentations will highlight innovative models and strategies designed to support the unique needs of international students studying in the U.S., including those that:

  • Help students understand higher education expectations and practices in the U.S.
  • Help students overcome cultural differences, adapt to life in the U.S., and build meaningful connections to the university community
  • Deliver innovative English language programs and language proficiency assessments
  • Provide effective academic support services and academic strategies that lead to student success and retention
  • Provide administrative and student services, practices, and policies that ease students’ transition to study in the U.S. and support their success and retention
  • Support international students during the admissions, funding, VISA approval, orientation, and on-boarding phases
  • Help faculty, staff, and administrators understand, and be sensitive and responsive, to the unique needs of international students

Seats are limited, on a first-come basis ... so register early!  Registration ends on October 31, 2014 (or earlier if seats have been filled prior to Oct 31).

Registration Fee: $75 (includes continental breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon breaks, and conference materials).

Location and Directions

This event will be held at the Shippensburg University Conference Center. For GPS or other mapping software, use the address 500 Newburg Road, Shippensburg, PA 17257For driving directions to the Conference Center (be sure to following directions to the Conference Center, not to Shippensburg University) go to http://www.conferencecenteratshipu.com/index.php/contacts/directions.html. The Conference Center is building #49 on the Shippensburg campus map at https://www.ship.edu/Visit/Campus_Maps. There is ample parking in front of the Conference Center, and parking permits/passes/stickers are not needed and there is no charge for parking.

Information for Presenters

  • Presenters will have the opportunity to contribute their presentation slides and/or other presentation materials for posting on the symposium website.
  • Presenters will have the opportunity to contribute their work to a post-symposium online monograph.  Additional information about this opportunity will be sent to presenters closer to the symposium date.
  • Presentations have been allotted a total of 45 minutes for their presentation and answering questions from the audience.
  • Presenters should plan for no more than 30-40 minutes of presentation, allowing 5-10 minutes for questions and answers.
  • Each presentation room will ONLY be equipped with a projector, wireless internet, a long table at the front/side of the room for presentation materials, and chairs for the audience will be arranged theater style.
  • Presenters are expected to bring their own presentation laptop (or other suitable device); presenters who bring an Apple product as their presentation computer should also bring their own adapter. 
  • Presenters are expected to bring any additional materials that they may need to achieve the learning objectives of their presentation.
  • Presentation handouts are not required; presenters who wish to provide handouts should plan to bring 25-30 copies as copy facilities will not be available at the Conference Center.
