History students to present women's exhibit March 12

As part of Women’s History Month, Dr. Susan Rimby, a professor in the history/philosophy department, wanted to celebrate by giving her history and women’s studies students a project that would involve the local community and go beyond a typical research paper.

“I wanted to organize a service learning project that would add authentic meaning to students’ work,” said Rimby. The students are in Rimby's Women in U.S. History class.

The project, “Great Women in the Cumberland Valley,” is a collection of exhibits created by the students to honor the traditions of local women from Cumberland County. The museum-style exhibits will be on view March 12 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Ceddia Union Building lounges B and C.

Students will also present the exhibits a second time for students in the Cumberland Valley, Mechanicsburg, West Shore, Carlisle and South Middleton school districts.

Students chose women based on the particular women or a topic in history. “One student chose Pulitzer Prize winner Marianne Moore, because she was from Carlisle as is the student,” said Rimby.

Photos, artifacts and posters provide realistic depictions of women throughout history. While a few more famous women are showcased, the 14 exhibits aim to provide a historical snapshot into the ordinary lives of average, local women.
