University to host MLK celebration
A series of events, including the 22nd Annual March for Humanity, panel discussions and a community luncheon with guest speakers from throughout the region, will highlight Shippensburg University's celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 18 and 21, 2010. The theme of the celebration is The King Alliance Under King's Umbrella. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is:
Jan. 18, 2010
- Community Celebration in Reisner Hall
- 8 to 9 a.m.: Complimentary community breakfast
- 9 to 10 a.m.: Pastoral panel on "Under King's Umbrella "with Dr. Ronnie Tucker, moderator; the Rev. Dr. Manny Diaz, Chambersburg; the Rev. Dr. Paul Yeun, director of pastoral services at Chambersburg Hospital; and Osho David Doyle, Blue Mountain Lotus Society, Harrisburg.
- 10 to 11 a.m.: Cultural Jeopardy for students age 12 to 18 with Stephanie Coleman, academic coordinator for the MLK Program
- 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Dr. Sharnine Herbert, director of ethnic studies, will host the winners of the essay contest winners. Also planned is a multimedia presentation
- 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Complimentary community luncheon. Scheduled are performances by the Oasis of Love Church Choir, Heavenly Sent Church Choir, Harmonic Voices of Truth, and Blushing Well. Guest speakers will be Dr. William Ruud and Dr. Barbara Lyman from Shippensburg University; Bruce Hockersmith, mayor of Shippensburg; Peter Lagiovane, mayor of Chambersburg; Kirk Wilson, mayor of Carlisle; David Rice, principal of Shippensburg Intermediate School; Dr. Gerald Kohn, superintendent of the Harrisburg School District; and Dr. Joseph Padasak, superintendent of the Chambersburg Area School District.
Jan. 21, 2010
- 11 a.m. to noon: Social justice and union panel sponsored by APSCUF in the Ceddia Union Building (CUB) Room 226 B & C. Speakers are Dr. Debra Cornelius on "Viva La Causa! The Struggle for Worker Justice Then and Now;" Dr. Susan Rimby on "Unions and Feminism;" and Dr. Robert Shaffer on "Martin Luther King's Last Days: Standing with Striking Workers in Memphis, 1968."
- 3:30 p.m.: 22nd Annual March for Humanity beginning in the CUB MPR. Immediately following the march is the MLK Fusion Fest in the CUB Great Hall with free food. That event is sponsored by the African American Organziation and the Office of Social Equity.
