Ship celebrates Day of Human Understanding 

GishJenArticleShippensburg University will celebrate diversity, inclusion and cultural competence during their annual Day of Human Understanding on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The day will feature a lecture by author Gish Jen at 7 p.m. in the Luhrs Performing Arts Center. 

Jen, an award-winning author, is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was a Guggenheim fellow and a fellow of the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study. She received a Lannan Literary award in fiction, as well as a $250,000 Strauss Living Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters. 

Her novels include critically acclaimed works such as “Typical American” and “Mona in the Promised Land.” Her latest nonfiction book, “The Girl at the Baggage Claim: Explaining the East-West Culture Gap,” has drawn praise from figures such as Eric Lander to Yo-Yo Ma.
