Q. Why is the university contracting with Official Payments rather than continuing to take credit cards directly?
A. Other PASSHE universities have been doing this for some time, but SU waited to ensure this process would work to meet the needs of both the University and our students. Contracting with Official Payments provides added security and convenience to students who want to continue to pay with credit cards, while saving the University money.
Q. Who is Official Payments?
A. Official Payments is the leading provider of electronic payment options for higher education institutions and federal, state and local government agencies. Official Payments, which is VeriSign secured and certified by TRUSTe Privacy, processes electronic payments for the IRS, 26 state governments, the District of Columbia, 2,200+ counties and municipalities, and higher education institutions across all 50 states.
Q. What are the advantages of using Official Payments?
A. The service makes paying tuition and fees more convenient in many ways:
1. Faster payment via Internet no need to write and mail a check
2. Rewards from card issuers that carry such programs
3. Comfort of knowing your payment has been made through a trusted and secure service provider that has been authorized by the IRS since 1999.
Q. Why isn't VISA® accepted by Official Payments for my university tuition and fees?
A. VISA® does not allow percentage-based convenience fees for payments made to higher education institutions. Official Payments does accept American Express®, Discover® and MasterCard® for payment of tuition and fees.
Q. Why is there a convenience fee and why am I paying for this?
A. Official Payments charges a convenience fee for processing the transaction. This fee is not charged by or paid to Shippensburg University. The convenience fee is assessed to cover operating costs and the costs associated with servicing thousands of credit card transactions. You will be informed of all fees before you authorize your payment.
Q. How safe is Official Payments' system?
A. Official Payments is strongly committed to protecting the privacy of individuals as a licensee of the TRUSTe Privacy Program and partners with VeriSign to ensure the highest level of security. Official Payments complies with the Gramm Leach Bliley Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Payment Card Industry standards. The information Official Payments gathers is private and will not be forwarded to anyone.
Q. Will I receive a confirmation of my payment?
A. Yes. You will be provided a confirmation number at the end of the transaction. If you pay via the Internet, you will be issued an onscreen digital receipt, which can be printed as your record of confirmation and transaction. Additionally, if you provide an email address, you will receive an email verification of your online payment.
Q. What payments methods are available to me?
A. On-Line: Credit cards and e-checks will be available through myShip.
Mail: Payment can be made by check or money order mailed to the Student Accounts Office.
In-Person: Checks, money orders and cash will be accepted in the Student Accounts Office.
Q. Will I still receive a paper bill?
A. No. Bills are only available online through myShip.
