Preparing for Middle States 2009

Shippensburg University will be hosting a visiting team from the Middle States Commission of Higher Education April 5-8.  At the end of last semester, there were forums open to the campus community in order to get one last bit of feedback on the self-study.  This feedback is being used to make the finishing touches on the self-study before it is sent off to the members of the visiting team in just a few weeks.

Now it is time for the campus to turn its attention to preparing for the team visit. To start the preparation, here is a list of tasks that each member of the Shippensburg family can do:

  1. Review the following information about Ship:
    1. Standards on Mission, Planning and Assessment
    2. Governance at Ship
    3. Educational Offerings and Faculty at Ship
    4. Student Admission and Support at Ship
    5. Serving those beyond Ships boundaries

  2. Know Ship's mission and goals, your division's mission and goals, your department's mission and goals, and how all of these are connected to each other.

  3. Know the 14 standards of the Middle States Commission of Higher Education (see Standards [PDF 506KB]).

  4. Know the information contained in the self-study document (on https://portal.ship.edu/).

  5. Be able to answer questions from a visiting team member, such as:
    1. What are the different missions and goals that apply to you (see 4 above)?
    2. What is your role in improving the effectiveness of your department/division/university and what improvements have been made recently?
    3. Which of the 14 standards are relevant to you and your unit?
    4. Which goals do you think Shippensburg accomplishes well and should be highlighted in the report by Middle States?
    5. Which goals do you think Shippensburg needs to work on and should be highlighted in the report by Middle States?
    6. Where do you see Shippensburg in five years?  In ten years?

Shippensburg University has a reputation of being a quality institution where students earn a valuable education.  It has a tradition of continually improving, thus making Ship stronger. .
