Public Relations

The public relations professional emphasis in communication/journalism prepares you for a career working in media relations, public affairs or digital communications.

The Department of Communication/Journalism offers a wide range of classes that not only teach you how to create campaigns and strategic communication plans, but also how to use social media effectively in the business world. Our students have the opportunity to get involved in student media groups, including the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). PRSSA is a network of more than 11,000 students across the nation who study and practice public relations. By joining Shippensburg University's PRSSA chapter, students can gain experience with real clients in the business world.

Students interested in studying public relations must complete all of the requirements for the bachelor's degree in communication/journalism and the following 12 credits in professional emphasis:

  • COM201 Principles of Public Relations
  • COM241 Public Relations Writing
  • COM381 Promotional Publication Design
  • COM432 Public Relations Research & Campaign 

The Shippensburg University Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is dedicated to serving the university as well as businesses and non-profit organizations in the surrounding community. The chapter is over 15 years old and membership is available to any student on campus interested in public relations and integrated marketing. The declared purpose of PRSSA is to cultivate a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students and professional public relations practitioners.

The student society aims to foster the following:

  • Understanding of current theories and procedures of the profession
  • Appreciation of the highest ethical ideals and principles
  • Awareness of an appropriate professional attitude
  • Appreciation of Associate Membership in PRSSA and eventually accredited membership

Today, the PRSSA has more than 9,600 members in 284 universities across the country.

SUPR is a student-operated public relations firm. This co-curricular organization accepts real-world clients on- and off-campus each semester and provides a wide-range of professional PR services, including:

  • Research
  • Publication design
  • Website design
  • Promotional campaigns

If you have an interest in public relations, advertising, or promotional communication, then SUPR is the place for you. You do not have to be Communication/Journalism major to join.
