Email FAQs for Students

How can I access my email account?

Student Email uses the Outlook Web Access Email system -- -- http://mail.ship.edu.

How do I get a password?

To login to the new email system, you will first need to obtain a password to the new system --

Login to the Student Information System
Select Computer Services
Select ..get email userid
Your email user id will be displayed to you on the screen. You will be prompted to create a password.
The password you create will allow you to logon to campus lab workstations, access email, access your personal file space, and create a personal website.

What are password requirements

Strong passwords and periodic password changes are required in order to protect the information stored on campus systems.

  • Your password must be at least 8 characters in length
  • It may not contain significant portions of the user's account name, first name or last name
  • It may be changed only once within 24 hours
  • It must contain characters from three of the following four categories:
    1. English uppercase characters (A through Z)
    2. English lowercase characters (a through z)
    3. Numerics (0 through 9)
    4. Special/non-alphabetic/non-numeric characters (for example, !, #, %)
  • It must be changed at least once every 90 days

A suggestion for easily creating a strong password is to think in terms of a pass phrase or short sentence using punctuation. For example, the following examples are easy to remember – but strong as well.

  • Letitsnow!  -Uses upper case, lower case, and special characters(!)
  • Snowis4me  -Uses upper case, lower case, and numerics
  • Frosty_Snowman  -Uses upper case, lower case, and a special character(_)
  • Sn0wb@ll  -Uses upper case, lower case, numerics(zero), and special characters(@)
What if my login failed?

When logging into Microsoft Outlook WebAccess, you will need to use your full email address (userid@ship.edu) and your email password.

Make sure you are a currently registered student. Only students who have enrolled in a class for the current semester will be able to access their account. If you are not currently enrolled, your account will be reactivated as soon as you re-enroll.

If you are a currently enrolled student and your password worked before but you are now receiving a Login Failed message, then it is likely that your password has expired. You can go to https://password.ship.edu to change it.

Still can't login?

From an alternate email account, send an email message to compcent@ship.edu which includes the error message you are receiving when you try to login. Or you may bring your student ID card to the Math & Computing Tech Center Room 050 Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm.

What if I am getting messages from the system administrator saying that I need to reduce the size of my mailbox?

Students email accounts have 20MB of storage for all mail messages, including Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Messages and other Folders.  If you receive messages informing you that you are at or near the limit, then it is necessary to find the messages taking up the space.

First, check your Deleted Items folder. If there are any email messages in this folder, right-click on Deleted Items and choose Empty Deleted Items

The second place to check is Sent Items.  You should go through this folder and delete any unneeded messages. (After you delete them, go back to Deleted Items and choose Empty Deleted Items.)
TIP: You can sort any mailbox folder by size to see which items are taking up the most space:

In the message list, there is a column for Size. Click on the Size tab to sort the entire folder by size.  If you do not have a column for Size, then change the View to Messages.   For example, if you are viewing the contents of the Sent Items folder, beside the folder heading Sent Items, there is the drop down option which says Sent To.  To change this, click on Sent To and choose Messages.  Then click on the Size tab to sort by size. You will be able to see which items are the largest and you can just delete those. If there are any whose size is in MB, those are the largest and you should delete them since they are taking up the most space in your email box.

How do I learn more about Outlook Web Access?

Outlook Web Access offers extensive information about the functions and options available to users. Simply click on the toolbar's help icon Outlook help Icon. Expand or collapse the view of available help options by clicking on the plus or minus boxes plus icon on the left side menu.

How can I increase the inactivity timeout for Outlook Web Access?

Choose the "Private Computer" option on the login screen. This option will allow 24 hours before the session times out due to inactivity. Only select this option if you are the only person who uses the computer. The "Public or shared computer" option will cause the session to timeout after 15 minutes of inactivity. This option should be selected if you are accessing Outlook Web Access from a public computer in a microlab, library, Internet café, airport, etc.

How do I forward my email to another account?
