Shippensburg University to host Spring Disabilities Studies lecture

Shippensburg University will host its spring Disability Studies lecture featuring Dr. Sharon O’Brien, professor of English and American studies at Dickinson College, on March 1 at 3:30 p.m. in Old Main chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

O’Brien’s lecture “Depression in America’s Happiness Culture,” will explore the discrepancy between the culture of happiness and the reality of depression in American society as it plays out across the lifespan, with each age group expected to cheerfully and successfully navigate stressful and uncertain circumstances.

O’Brien is the John Hope Caldwell Professor of American Cultures at Dickinson College. She has written two biographies of Willa Cather and a memoir, “The Family Silver: A Memoir of Depression and Inheritance.”

This event is sponsored by the Departments of English, History, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology and the Gerontology Minor. For more information, contact Dr. Allison Carey at accare@ship.edu or (717) 477-1582.
