Department of Social Work and Gerontology

During the last few years, our department has grown from one program, our BSW major, to a larger education community with a joint MSW degree with Millersville and a multidisciplinary gerontology minor.  All these programs focus on providing quality education to the future leaders of our helping professions.

BSW Program

Our BSW program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Our undergraduate program has been in existence since 1974. Since then we have grown to include almost 200 majors studying to become the social workers of the future.

MU-SU MSW Program

The joint MSW program between Millersville University and Shippensburg University (MU-SU MSW) is going into its fourth year of operation. The program, which includes a combination of videoconferencing, distance education technology and campus based classes, allows students to enroll at the campus of their choice.

Applications for the next cohort, which will enroll in May 2010 are currently being accepted.  To learn more about the application process go to our MSW website.  To begin the application process go to Graduate Admissions.

During their February 2009 meeting, the Commission on Accreditation of CSWE voted to grant the MU-SU MSW program approval to move into the final stage of accreditation which is authorization for a site visit. We have submitted our final self-study, and we had our site visit for initial accreditation Oct. 21-23, 2009.  A positive report has been submitted to CSWE by the team of site visitors.  We await the vote of the Commission at their February 2010 meeting.

Accreditation status will be retroactive to Fall 2006 and will apply to all students who enrolled in the program as of that time.
