K-12 Educators Institute

Course registration begins: Monday, March 20, 2023

Shippensburg University has been dedicated for over 140 years to providing professional development opportunities to educators. Ship's K-12 Educators Institute is a series of short-term graduate workshop courses offered for professionals at all levels of K-12 instruction. Our wide variety of courses are great for teachers, counselors, principals, homeschoolers and daycare professionals and are designed by Shippensburg University faculty and district/IU experts.

K-12 Educators Institute offers:

  • A variety of subject areas  
  • Courses for graduate credit and/or continuing education units
  • Flexible learning experiences online, on-campus, off-campus site
  • Most courses can be completed in one or two weeks

Current & Past Students

Shippensburg University encourages all students who've taken or are currently taking courses to register for K-12 Educators Institute summer course offerings. To register for summer courses: Log into the MyShip portal using your Ship email address and password. If you took any K-12 Educators Institute courses last summer and do not remember your login information, please email owd@ship.edu for assistance. 

Non-Degree Students

Ship welcomes individuals who are interested in taking Shippensburg University classes without being a degree-seeking student. You must meet the University’s academic requirements, which can be viewed within graduate and undergrad catalogs. Interested non-degree students must complete the following, for successful enrollment into desired class:

  • Must complete the prerequisite coursework for the particular course in which they want to enroll 
  • Enrolling in a class that is open and permits non-degree students

ART & DESIGN

ART 490.61 - Selected Topics: Painting with Paper and Paint

June 12 - 16, 2023; Monday - Friday

This course focuses on exploring the additive and subtractive approaches to painting using both paper and other painting techniques. Building images with paper and paint will expand the student's appreciation for revision and exploring a creative methodology based on decision making. Developing an enhanced sensitivity to Color, Value, Texture, and the paintings' surface is a focus of this course. The student will identify the content and select materials for the artwork. The student may also elect to work towards a portfolio containing a variety of studio experiences; new, revisited, or ongoing.

 

ART 491.61 - Selected Topics: Creative Drawing Practices

Exposes the student to a variety of creative drawing practices. Whether drawing from life or imagination, the course will identify unique approaches and drawing techniques for creating drawings seeking to explore content of the student's interest. The student will have an opportunity to work with a variety of materials, and explore unique tools and techniques related to specific media of their choosing. The student may also opt to investigate other two-dimensional directions of interest during the course. Monday, June 19 is a holiday and daily hours will be blended during the week. 

 

ART 492.65 - Selected Topics: Abstraction from Realism

This course focuses on developing abstract images from representational sources, The student will identify the subjects of personal interest and explore each through simplification, distortion, and re-organization. Expressive methodology will guide the development of the imagery. The student will select the media (drawing, painting, mixed media, other) to use in this course. Producing a portfolio of artwork containing a variety of studio experiences in other media (new, revisited, or ongoing) is also a course option.

 ELP 492 - Consultation Skills for Educators: An Adlerian Approach

This didactic and experiential course will focus on developing and enhancing the consultation skills of educators in three areas: educator-student consultation, educator-family consultation, and educator-educator consultation. Emphasis will be on practical strategies based on the theory and practice of Adlerian psychology. Materials presented in the workshop will be based on current educational and consultation literature and the delivery of the curriculum will be based on the psychology of Alfred Adler focusing on equality, empathy, encouragement and empowerment in a democratic atmosphere.
