To become a teacher in Pennsylvania various certification tests are required, depending on your program of study.  As a general rule, a candidate must take and pass the test(s) associated with the certification they are seeking to earn.

Before you begin student teaching it is requested that you attempt at least one of your test requirements.  Completion of all tests and/or passing scores are not required before student teaching, but will be required prior to applying for instructional certification in Pennsylvania (see Step 8).

Want to know more about Certification Testing Requirements?  Check out the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) site.

Prepare yourself!

As with any test it's important to be prepared.  Both PECT and Praxis offer test preparation materials, some free and some not.

Keep in mind that you are permitted to take, and re-take a test as many times as necessary to obtain a passing score.  So don't worry if you fail your first attempt.  Just remember that the fee incurred with each attempt will be your responsibility.
