Trustees honor two student-athletes for national awards

Shippensburg University’s Council of Trustees March 15 honored two student-athletes who earned national recognition last year.

Trustees approved resolutions for Bre White and Zach Zulli. White, a field hockey player, was named the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Field Hockey Player of the Year. Zulli, a football player, earned the Harlon Hill Trophy, the prestigious NCAA Division II award equivalent to the Heisman Trophy. Following are the resolutions.  

Resolution honoring Bre White

  • WHEREAS, since field hockey began at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 1944 it has become ingrained in the life of the campus; and 
  • WHEREAS, the storied history of the field hockey program is replete with the athletic accomplishments of variouswhite players; and 
  • WHEREAS, junior forward Bre White has added her name to that list with a 2012 season in which her leadership enabled the team to end the season with a sterling record of 17-3, including a berth in the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II field hockey championships; and  
  • WHEREAS, her individual efforts including leading the team during the regular season with 17 goals and nine assists for 43 points, scoring multiple points in 12 of 18 games; and 
  • WHEREAS, she earned much deserved recognition for her personal accomplishments by being named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West First Team for the third straight year, being named the 2012 PSAC West Player of the Year, being named to the 2012 PSAC All-Tournament team, being named to the NCAA Division II All-American squad for the third consecutive season, being named as the NFHCA South Region Player of the Year and being named to the 2012 NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad; and 
  • WHEREAS, her team and personal accomplishments culminated with her being named the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Field Hockey Player of the Year;
     
  •  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of Trustees of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania congratulates Bre White for her nationally-recognized field hockey accomplishments and for serving as an outstanding representative of the University, its athletics department, and the student body. 

Resolution honoring Zach Zulli 

  • WHEREAS, since football began at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 1891 it has become ingrained in the life of the campus; and 
  • WHEREAS, the storied history of the football program is replete with the athletic accomplishments of various players; and zulli   
  • WHEREAS, junior quarterback Zach Zulli has added his name to that list by breaking 25 school records during the 2012 football season, including single-game, single-season and career records for completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns, as well as records for consecutive games with a touchdown pass and consecutive passes without an interception; and 
  • WHEREAS, his leadership helped the Red Raiders to an undefeated regular season record and post-season games in both the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship Game and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II playoffs and a No. 14 national ranking at season’s end; and 
  • WHEREAS, those accomplishments were also of note in the NCAA’s Division II where he led the nation with 4,747 passing yards and all of college football with 54 passing touchdowns, tying the NCAA Division II single-season record; and
     
  • WHEREAS, his efforts were recognized with a multitude of honors including the 2012 Associated Press Little All-America Team, the 2012 Daktronics All-America Team, the 2012 Daktronics Ron Lenz Offensive Player of the Year and the 2012 Daktronics Super Region I Offensive Player of the Year; and 
  • WHEREAS, those accomplishments resulted in his earning the 2012 Harlon Hill Trophy, becoming the first Shippensburg University player and only the seventh underclassman to win the prestigious award, which is the NCAA Division II equivalent of the Heisman Trophy; 
  •  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of Trustees of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania congratulates Zach Zulli for his nationally-recognized football accomplishments and for serving as an outstanding representative of the University, its athletics department, and the student body.
