First-Generation Celebration Zoom Design Contest
Submissions accepted Thursday, October 22 until Thursday, November 5 @ 11 AM to Studentsfirst@ship.edu.
Do you draw, paint, or create digital graphics? Do you like to design beautiful backgrounds for your laptop or phone? If so you do not want to miss this opportunity to showcase your talents.
A winner will be selected during the presentation with a majority vote.
Students, staff, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to submit an artistic creation to Studentsfirst@ship.edu that recognizes, celebrates, and/or inspires first-generation college students at Ship for your chance to win a 25 dollar Amazon gift card! All submissions due by Thursday, November 5 at 11 AM.
All artwork will be showcased to the campus community in a virtual art gallery over Zoom on Thursday, November 5 from 12-1 PM (see below). A winner will be selected during the presentation with a majority vote.
If you’re not artistic, that’s okay. You can still show support by uploading a Ship Student First background and taking a picture with it as your zoom background to send to Studentsfirst@ship.edu to participate in the zoom contest.
First-Generation Student Alliance Cookie Contest Fundraiser
Contest submissions accepted until Saturday, November 7 @ 11 AM to Studentsfirst@ship.edu.
$1 per student entry, $5 per faculty, staff, or parent entry.
All funds raised support the First-Generation Student Alliance at Ship.
Dig out Grandma’s recipe book! All Ship students, staff, faculty, alumni and parents are invited to enter their favorite cookie recipe with an accompanying picture or video to the FGSA Second Annual Cookie Contest Fundraiser at email@example.com. A panel of judges from across campus will announce the lucky winner over Zoom on Saturday, November 7 (see below) for yearlong bragging rights as the Campus Cookie Master. Tune in to the awards Sunday for creative ideas for those holiday cookie exchange.
Winner will receive the golden whisk award (once business covid restrictions are lifted and a gift card).
First-Generation Student Alliance Virtual Silent Auction
Auction bids begin Monday November 2nd at 1pm and close Saturday, November 7 @ 11 AM on 32Auctions.com/FGSA.
The entire community is invited to support first-generation students and compete for prize baskets!
The First-Generation Student Alliance organization has worked hard this fall to collect donations for amazing auction baskets from businesses all across the state. Participants can virtually compete for the highest bid all week long until bidding closes Saturday at 11 AM.
Winners are announced over Zoom on Saturday at Noon (see below). Bidding site and baskets will be announced as soon as possible. All funds raised support the First-Generation Student Alliance at Ship.

Virtual Book Discussion with Dr. Khalid Mumin ‘95
Discussing "Problem Child: Leading Students Living in Poverty Towards Infinite Possibilities of Success", with author Dr. Khalid Mumin.
Students, staff, faculty, and alumni are invited to join the Office of Students First for an immersive virtual experience led by Dr. Khalid Mumin ‘95, Pennsylvania’s 2021 Superintendent of the Year at Reading Area School District, and SU’s 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
Explore the insights of Dr. Mumin who will be joined by our student and staff panelists Nathan Favretto, Dameeyah Floyd, Demetrius Laster, Yong Hang Lin, Cara Lin, Riley Brown, Cindy Murray, and Jaime Juarez while they examine Dr. Mumin’s new book, "Problem Child: Leading Students Living in Poverty Towards Infinite Possibilities of Success". Topics of conversation will focus on the first-generation student experience, first-generation student support, and the power of mentorship.
According to the Reading Eagle, Mumin’s book is, “part autobiography and part educational blueprint…[it] has been the No. 1 new release in educator biographies for several days on Amazon. Another book that has flirted with the top three is "Fred Rogers: The Last Interview: and Other Conversations.”
But, no need to read before joining to listen, observe, and learn!

Paint Your SUccess: Free painting activity, snacks, and giveaways for Ship students
Location: CUB 125- Raider Lounge
Ship Family are invited to participate in our on-campus activity, Paint Your SUccess! When you envision success, what do you see? Get creative and paint your picture of success at the artist activity station. Then, add your painting to our First-Generation Canvas of SUccess to inspire future generations to chart their own path and define their personal success.
Participants can receive a first Gen Bag snack and a limited addition mask First Generation Ship Mask to thank you for your support of First Gen Students!
Event limited to first 60 participants. First come-first serve. To accommodate social distancing, 30 participants will be hosted at Noon. The next 30 students will enter the activity at 12:30 PM. Masks are required for entry. (Students wishing to participate will receive priority over faculty and staff)

Did you know, Shippensburg University’s President Laurie Carter was a first-generation student? Join President Carter and other distinguished members of Shippensburg’s administration who were the first in their family to attend college. Ask questions and interact in the panel discussion as some of the most respected individuals at Ship tell their inspirational story of SUccess!

First-Generation Virtual Art Gallery: Zoom background contest winner announced!
Join the Office of Students First for a virtual art gallery! This gallery showcases the work of Ship students, staff, faculty, and alumni that was submitted (Check above for specific details). Pop in during this hour to cast your vote for the zoom background you feel is most creative.
Students, staff, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to submit an artistic creation to Studentsfirst@ship.edu for your chance to win a gift card! All submissions due by Wednesday, November 4 at 2 PM. A winner will be selected during the presentation with a majority vote.

First-Generation Student Panel
Are you a student, faculty, or staff member that wants to know how to better support first-generation students? Are you a first-generation student looking for support?
Join our own first-generation Ship students as they provide insight to their experiences on entering and persevering in college. The Q and A style panel allows for an interactive event covering the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of First-Generation students.

First-Generation Student Alliance Cookie Contest Fundraiser / Silent Auction Fundraiser
Need some creative cookie ideas for holiday exchange parties this year? Look no further! Join the FGSA as they host their 2nd Annual Cookie Bake-Off Fundraiser. Modified for virtual audiences this year, Ship community members all across the country can tune in for yummy cookie ideas and recipes from students, staff, faculty, parents, and alumni.
At the conclusion of the recipe presentation, a panel of judges from across campus will award the lucky winner the golden whisk trophy, a gift card, and yearlong bragging rights. In addition, all winners of the Virtual Silent Auction will be announced during this time.
All funds raised support the First-Generation Student Alliance at Ship.

To close out the First Generation Celebration week we will be making a big announcement at 12pm and then we will be recapping and highlighting our First Generation Students and activities.
