Two Ship students receive Fulbright awards

For the first time in school history, in the same year, two Shippensburg University students received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Hannah Lougheed ’17 and Shelby Coghill ’15 are two of only 1,900 U.S. citizens selected to conduct research, teach English and provide expertise abroad for the 2018-2019 academic year through the Fulbright Program. Recipients of the awards are selected based on academic and professional achievement as well as a record of service and leadership potential in their respective fields.

Lougheed will be a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at the University of Brazil and is excited to help others.

“I’m excited as I consider what I’ll accomplish through this scholarship while in Brazil, including English education, volunteerism and personal growth,” Lougheed said.

Coghill will take her three years of experience teaching English-language learners to Columbia.

“I hope to accomplish a deeper understanding of how to best advocate for Latin American immigrants in our educational system upon my return to the United States,” Coghill said.

This is Shippensburg’s fourth student Fulbright award since the International Studies major was established in 2013 and the fifth overall. Shippensburg is Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education leader in student (4) and scholar (8) Fulbrights since 2010.
