                             Academic Advisor Training 

Richard Light reminds us that advising can be the single most significant component of a student's successful college experience (Making the Most of College: Students Speak Their Minds, 2001). Advising can also be a significant component in personal and professional satisfaction for the faculty advisor. However, effective advising presents challenges to both advisor and student-it is a partnership in which each has responsibilities, and it is a process that demands the development of a set of knowledge and skills that enhance the student-advisor relationship.

The importance of training advisors has always been a priority for the Advising Development Program. Each semester the ADRT sponsors a variety of workshops and online training modules to assist advisors to gain the knowledge and develop the skills important to quality advising. These professional development opportunities are ideal for advisors just beginning their advising responsibilities, experienced advisors desiring to enhance their skills, and those who enjoy the collegial exchange of ideas.

By participating in the training, advisors will:

  • understand the philosophy and structure for advising at SHIP
  • be familiar with university policies and procedures
  • be familiar with degree programs and graduation requirements
  • know strategies for establishing and maintaining the advisor-student relationship
  • know strategies for structuring advising sessions
  • be able to maximize use of available resources

New Advisor Training

New faculty members should complete the New Advisor Training within their first year at SHIP. Experienced advisors may also take advantage of the training to enhance their knowledge and skills. The training is delivered in two formats to accommodate various learning styles and scheduling preferences. The same information is delivered in each format. To receive a Certificate of Completion, advisors must complete all components of one of the formats or make alternative arrangements with the Coordinator of Advising Development.

2 ½ day Workshop: The training sessions are conducted during the week before the fall and spring semesters begin. The materials are presented through PowerPoint presentations, guest presenters, and readings. Opportunities are provided for advisors to reflect, share experiences, and engage in hands-on experience in dealing with key advising issues. This format has the advantages of engaging in group discussions, meeting fellow advisors and key campus personnel, receiving immediate feedback to questions and concerns, and being adaptable to the needs of the attendees. Online Training: The hybrid format combines online modules delivered through Blackboard and two sit-down training sessions. The online materials are presented through content notes, PowerPoint presentations, and readings. Opportunities are provided for advisors to reflect on key advising issues. This format has the advantage of being self-paced and allowing advisors to work through the online modules at their convenience; however, it is recommended that the online modules be completed prior to attending the sit-down sessions, which are presented early in the fall and spring semesters. Advisor Development Workshops

Each semester, the ADRT sponsors a variety of special topic advising workshops. The workshops are presented by SHIP faculty and staff who have expertise in the topic. All advisors and those interested in advising concerns are encouraged to attend.
