Math Placement Levels

Beginning in Spring 2022, Shippensburg University is using ALEKS PPL for Math placement testing. Once you complete an ALEKS placement assessment, you will receive a score between 0 and 100. Based on this score, you will achieve one of six Math Placement Levels.

1

Students at Level 1 can take either MAT105 – Math for Liberal Studies  to satisfy their Quantitative General Education requirement. MAT100 – Introductory Algebra is for students in majors that require MAT 117 Applied Statistics, MAT140 College Algebra, MAT175 Precalculus, MAT181 Applied Calculus or MAT211 Calculus.  Students should consult their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

26 to 30

Students at Level 2 can take MAT 105 – Math for Liberal Studies, MAT 107 – Mathematical Models Applied to Money, or MAT 110 – Fundamentals of Mathematics I to satisfy their Quantitative General Education requirement. MAT100 – Introductory Algebra is for students in majors that require MAT 117 Applied Statistics, MAT140 College Algebra, MAT175 Precalculus, MAT181 Applied Calculus or MAT211 Calculus.  Students should consult their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

31 to 40

Students at Level 3 can take MAT 105 – Math for Liberal Studies, MAT 107 –Mathematical Models Applied to Money, MAT 110 – Fundamentals of Mathematics I, MAT 117 – Applied Statistics. 41 to 57

Students at Level 4 can take any of the Level 3 courses or MAT140 – College Algebra. Students should consult with their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

58 to 75

Students at Level 5 can take any of the Level 3 & 4 courses. Students at this level can also take MAT175 – Precalculus, MAT181 – Applied Calculus, MAT217 – Statistics I, or MAT225 Discrete Mathematics. Students should consult with their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

76 to 100

Students at Level 6 can take any of the Level 5 courses (except for MAT175 -- Precalculus). Students at this level can also take MAT211 – Calculus I. Students should consult with their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

 

Students with higher college testing scores (SAT-M and ACT) will be assigned a placement level between Level 4 and Level 6 without having to complete ALEKS first. If a student feels prepared for a higher-level course, they can enroll in ALEKS and attempt to achieve a higher placement level.
