What Will I Learn?

You will learn how to become an advanced generalist social work practitioner to work in the areas of :

  • Aging
  • Child welfare
  • Criminal justice/corrections
  • Drug and alcohol/addictive behaviors
  • Education/school social work
  • Family services
  • Health care/public health
  • Homelessness
  • Disabilities

Core classes, electives and internships will provide you with the necessary values, knowledge, affective and cognitive processes and competencies to practice social work with all client systems in a variety of settings and various roles. You will be able to facilitate change within the boundaries of social justice and human rights.

NEW! Students with an undergraduate degree in social work who qualify for advanced standing may advance their education with Ship's online MSW.  Classes are taught by the same faculty who teach in the face-to-face program and are designed for working professionals with workplace internship options. Classes may meet asynchronously or synchronously one evening per week.

Upon graduating from the program, following steps to register with the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, and Licensed Professional Counselors, and passing the accompanying Association of Social Work Boards exam, students can earn the Licensed Master of Social Work credential in PA.

What Kinds of Experiences Could I Have?

This program is an advanced generalist model. All core classes are offered in the evening, either face-to-face or in a blended format with some online work. Some electives are 100 percent online. Classes are also small, taught by faculty who are specialized in the areas they teach and full of lively discussion and group activities. Many assignments are related to real life situations in the internship or practice settings.

You will take all courses on the campus where you are enrolled, but you will benefit from the quality faculty and resources of both Shippensburg and Millersville universities.

What Types of Careers Could I Get With This Degree?

Few occupations can match social work, which offers a wide range of opportunities and settings. Social workers with a master’s degree can be found in public agencies, private businesses, hospitals, clinics, schools, nursing homes, private practices, police departments, courts and numerous other exciting work settings. Social workers assist individuals, families and communities. They can be managers, supervisors and administrators. They work at all levels of government. They are also educators. Social workers are therapists and researchers. Many are elected political leaders and legislators.
