Benefits of Membership

The Wood Honors College allows students to excel academically with small, dynamic classes that encourage active learning. Honors classes are limited to 20-25 students, which allows for more personal interaction between students and the university's top professors, lively discussions and creative assignments.

Honors students receive the option to reside in the Honors Living-Learning Community, located in an on-campus, suite-style residence hall. This housing option provides a welcoming community where students can feel more at home during their time at Ship, especially through fun social events and academic resources.

Honors students receive priority registration each semester, which ensures their access to their preferred class schedule by allowing them to select their courses and professors earlier than most students.

Honors students' transcripts include an Honors designation, and students receive an Honors medallion to wear at graduation ceremonies as well as recognition in the graduation program.

Through its new students orientation program and introductory Honors classes, the Wood Honors College helps students get started on undergraduate research and creative projects. Students who complete independent research projects have a significant advantage in gaining employment and admission to graduate school.

The Wood Honors College offers scholarships to help defray travel costs for students who study abroad. Two Honors students are also chosen each summer to spend several weeks abroad with fellow Honors students from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Through programs like Pizza with a Prof, Honors students explore career opportunities in informal dinner meetings with faculty. The Wood Honors College also sponsors seminars to assist students who are interested in applying to graduate and professional schools.

The Honors Student Organization plans several recreational activities each year, including trips to New York City, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Through the program Uncommon Conversations, Honors students are able to meet in small groups with distinguished speakers who visit campus. Past speakers have included Academy Award-winning actor James Earl Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker.
