Release of Student Directory Information
Shippensburg University complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), governing access to educational records.
Under the provisions of FERPA, the university may release directory information about students without violating privacy rights. Shippensburg University does not make directory information generally available to the public. Shippensburg University limits its release of directory information for official University purposes, e.g., (1) identifying athletic team members; (2) publishing names of scholarship recipients, graduation lists and Dean’s Lists; (3) issuing academic awards; (4) verifying enrollment or degree status; and (5) providing such information to organizations that are officially affiliated with the University or with whom the University has a contractual relationship. See 34 C.F.R §99.37(d). Directory information includes name, home/local addresses and phone numbers, email address, enrollment status, major, degree and honors.
Individual students may request that this directory information not be released. To request that your information is not released, you may go to the Registrar's Office (OM 110) and fill out a written form; or complete the request form "Directory Information - Release or Suppress" available on the forms page.
When the request form is processed, those students are excluded from any printed directories and a message is displayed on computer screens indicating that the information is not to be released. The information remains available to university staff to be used for official purposes.
Any student who has requested their directory information not be released will have a confidentiality indicator set on their record. When "Confidential" is indicated on a student record or report, this means no information on the student can be shared with anyone other than a school official with a legitimate educational interest.
