Overview

This guide will show you how to set up your quiz or exam so that the questions your students get come from a pool of questions.  For Example, I want my students to get 10 random questions out of 20 possible questions.

Intended Audience:  Faculty

Setup a Quiz to pool questions from a Question Pool

1.  Click More Tools - Quizzes.

2.  Click Question Library.

3.  Click New - Section.

  • TIP:  Creating a new section is optional but recommended.  The main reason for this is to keep your questions organized and save you time when going through selecting all the questions.

4.  Enter a Section Title before Clicking Save.

  • TIP:  We recommend naming sections after the specific quiz or topic which the questions represent.  For Example, "Exam 1" or "American Revolution" could inform you that this section (folder) has questions that relate to quiz 1 or the American Revolution.  Doing so will then allow you to easily select all these questions when building your question pool for a specific quiz.
  • TIP:  You can also check the option "shuffle questions in this section" if you'd like but it's not necessary as the question pool will randomize the questions.

5.  Click on the section title.

6.  Click New and select the type of Question you want to create.

  • TIP:  This guide runs through the manual process involved in creating questions.  You can import questions, via import, if you have your questions in the proper CSV or Excel format.  Alternatively, if you have your questions in a word document, you might be able to get those questions imported as well and we would recommend reaching out to ID for assistance with that process.  If you are using a test bank from a publisher and you have a zip folder of those questions, you can use the import/export/copy components tool located in Course Admin to import those test banks into your question library.  If you have publisher test banks, we recommend reaching out to ID for assistance with this as well.  Email:  ID@ship.edu or Call 717-477-1816.

7.  Enter the Question Text - Select the appropriate answer - Enter the Default Points - Click Save.  Repeat this step until you've created all the questions you want.

8.  When finished building your questions, click Done Editing Questions.

9.  Edit an Existing Quiz or create a New Quiz - Click Add/Edit Questions.

  • TIP:  Check out this guide if you want to see how to create a Quiz

10.  Click New - Choose Question Pool.

11.  Enter a Question Pool Title - Set the Number of Questions to Select - Set the Points Per Question.

12.  Click Browse Question Library.

13.  Check the box to the left of your section title or select specific questions by clicking the box to the left of the specific question.

  • TIP: If you don't see your questions under your Section Title then Click the Arrow to the left of the Section title.

14.  Once all questions desired have been selected, click Add.

15.  Review the Setting.  From the example below, we have selected 11 total questions in our question pool and of those 11 the students will receive 5 randomly selected questions worth 1 point each.  On the left, we can see a preview of this.  Click Save when finished.

16.  Click Done Editing Questions

17.  Review the Question Preview pane under the Quiz properties tab.  You should see your Question Pool Title and the number of questions that will be pulled under it.  If you've included any regular questions outside of the question pool in the quiz you can see that as well.  All questions under the question pool will appear as "Random Question".

18.  Click Save and Close.  The quiz is now ready to be taken by students.  You can preview the quiz to see what it would look like by clicking the down arrow to the right of the quiz name and choosing preview.
