Spring 2022 Advisor Development Opportunities
Richard Light reminds us that advising can be the single most significant component of a student's successful college experience (Making the Most of College: Students Speak Their Minds, 2001).
Advising can also be a significant component in personal and professional satisfaction for the faculty advisor. However, effective advising presents challenges to both advisor and student-it is a partnership in which each has responsibilities, and it is a process that demands the development of a set of knowledge and skills that enhance the student-advisor relationship.
By participating in the Advisor Development programs and initiatives, faculty advisors will:
- understand the philosophy and structure for advising at SHIP
- be familiar with university policies and procedures
- be familiar with degree programs and graduation requirements
- know strategies for establishing and maintaining the advisor-student relationship
- know strategies for structuring advising sessions
- be able to maximize use of available resources

Advisor Safe Zone Training
Tuesday, January 25
3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
https://ship.zoom.us/j/92480583252
This training, led by PAGE Director Arielle Caltron, is an opportunity for advisors to learn about LGBTQ identities, gender, and sexuality to best communicate to those entering your office that you are open and supportive of LGBTQ individuals and identities.
Advising Students on Probation
Thursday, January 27
https://ship.zoom.us/j/92025781705

How a student reacts and manages their probationary status is a major determinant in their future academic success (Kelley, 1996). Discuss techniques to understand each of your probationary advisees individually and positively support their unique academic challenges as they work to achieve their personal and academic goals. If possible, read this NACADA Monograph prior to the workshop. The recording will be made available on the Faculty Advisor Toolbox (https://d2l.ship.edu/d2l/home/2755077).

Multicultural Advising in an Increasingly Diverse World
February 25; 12-1:30 p.m. Reisner Faculty Dining Hall
The numbers of racial or ethnic minority students on college campuses are growing steadily, and in the not-too-distant future, the “average” college freshman at many institutions may no longer be White (Huff & Harding, p.101, 2007). Drs. Sam Benbow and Manuel Ruiz will lead a discussion on ways to advise across cultures to minimize achievement gaps and increase success for both traditionally underrepresented students and all students. RSVP to mplevinstein@ship.edu
Advising LGBTQ Students
Tuesday, March 1
3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
https://ship.zoom.us/j/97631489580
Through an understanding of LGBTQ identify formation, the SU campus climate, and institutional barriers that LGBTQ students encounter, advisors can improve their advising of LGBTQ students. Drs. Jayleen Galarza, Rebecca Harris, and Nicole Santalucia along with PAGE Center Director, Arielle Caltron will facilitate a discussion on ways to better support and create a more welcoming experience for our LGBTQ students.
