Dr. Dhiman Chattopadhyay

“Digital technology and the democratization of information has radically altered the mass media landscape. But being good writers and tech-savvy may not be enough. Our students should also be able to work in culturally diverse contexts, be multi-skilled, and take on media leadership roles early in their careers in a world where start-ups, boutique agencies, and online-only, multinational news organizations are becoming common.”

Dr. Dhiman Chattopadhyay is an associate professor in the communication, journalism and media department, specializing in journalism and strategic communications. Prior to Ship, he was assistant professor of journalism and communication at Lamar University, Texas.

Originally from India, Dr. Chattopadhyay’s professional experience includes two decades as an executive editor, bureau chief, and reporter at newspapers and magazines such as the Times of India, Mid-Day, Business Today and Asian Age. He has traveled extensively, interviewing global political leaders, reporting on natural disasters, international sporting meets, and lifestyle issues from over a dozen nations in Asia, Europe and Africa. He has led day-to-day operations and editorial teams in some of India’s largest English language newsrooms.

Dr. Chattopadhyay’s research is at the intersection of mass communication, digital media and social change. His academic work has been published in peer reviewed journals such as Asian Journal of Communication, Global Media & Communication, Journal of Graphic Novels & Comics, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. His most recent books include Social Media’s Impact on Indian Journalism” – Palgrave-McMillan, UK and an edited volume “International Journalism: Challenges & Perspectives” – Routledge, UK, where university faculty from 16 nations across five continents contributed chapters.

He serves as an editorial board member of the Asia Pacific Media Educator (a Sage publication), and of the Journal of Contemporary Media & Comm Research, the peer reviewed journal of the Indian Association of Media & Communication Educators. He has also served as the International Chair of AEJMC’s Media Management & Economics Division (2016-18), is a founding executive committee member of the South Asia Communication Association (2017-), and has been a jury member of the Ohio Newspaper Association’s Annual Hooper Awards (2016-2018).
