Area Studies Certificates

Advising Form

12 credit hours are required for each Certificate   

Required Introductory Course (3 credits)

Students should take this course as soon as possible after declaring the Certificate.

  • (INT 200) Introduction to International Studies Concepts and Methods or an approved substitute.

* International Studies majors and minors, and students adding a Certificate in second world area must consult with the Director of International Studies to choose an appropriate substitute and complete an Exception Form.

Electives (9 credits)

The courses must be selected from 1 of the 4 world areas. Two of the elective courses need to be at the 300 level or higher. No courses may be double-counted between a Certificate and the International Studies major or minor, or a second Certificate in another world area. Study abroad and advanced language study are strongly encouraged and may satisfy elective credit.

** Requires an appropriate topic and an Exception Form signed by the Director of International Studies for approval.
