The Graduate Writing Center

Our Mission

Our mission is to support graduate students across courses and disciplines in their development as writers. This means that our services are FREE and available to ALL graduate students across courses and disciplines. Appointments are driven by the writer's assignment and goals. We can help with assignments ranging from informal personal response papers to formal research methodologies. Our graduate writing consultants are peers who can help you:

Acclimate to writing in graduate school
Answer questions you may have about writing and research
Navigate documentation and formatting requirements
Plan, draft, revise, or proofread your writing

We welcome you to schedule multiple appointments with one or more trusted writing consultants during your time as a graduate student.

Consultation Information

We offer four types of consultations to meet your preferences (see below). For all appointment types, please email your assignment description and draft paper to onlinewriting@ship.edu at least one hour before your scheduled appointment time. You do not need to email your materials if you included them in your intake form when you schedule.

In-Person Writing Consultations are held in the Graduate Writing Center office, located in Mowrey Hall room 137. All in-person consultations will last up to 60 minutes.
Synchronous Zoom Consultations occur in real-time via Zoom Video Conferencing software. To use this option, you must have internet access and a computer equipped with a microphone and camera. All synchronous Zoom consultations last up to 60 minutes. Instructions for Zoom Video Conferencing are available here
Asynchronous Writing Consultations with Video and Written Feedback do NOT involve a face-to-face meeting. Instead, written feedback and a video will be sent to your Shippensburg University email address within 24 hours of your appointment time.

Schedule A Writing Consultation

Please use the platform below to schedule your consultation. You have the option to schedule with a specific consultant once you choose an appointment type. Please keep in mind the following:

	Our writing consultants only have one hour to read each piece of writing. They can read approximately 10 pages of written text per consultation. If you would like your consultant to read more than 10 pages, please plan accordingly by scheduling more than one consultation in advance of the due date.
	Please limit your consultations to no more than 2 total appointments per week and 1 appointment per day. If you want or need more appointments, please email onlinewriting@ship.edu to let us know your circumstances.
	If you'd like to request a consultation time that isn't available through the online schedule, please email onlinewriting@ship.edu and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Hello! My name is Carissa Matthiesen, and I am a graduate writing consultant in the Graduate Writing Center. I graduated from Penn State University in 2021 with a bachelor of science in Psychology and a minor in Human Development Family Studies before deciding to pursue my master’s in counseling. I’m currently in my second year at Shippensburg University in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. I’m most familiar with APA and MLA formatting. When I’m not focusing on school, I enjoy reading and spending time with loved ones

Hi, my name is Abby, and I am one of the graduate assistants for writing support in the Learning Center. I offer both undergraduate writing tutoring appointments and graduate writing consultations. I graduated from Shippensburg in 2021 with a bachelor's in history and decided to stay at Ship to pursue a master's in clinical mental health counseling! I am also a Certified LGBTQ+ Affirmative Coach. In my free time, I enjoy hiking and spending time with my three dogs.
