Part Two: Two Essay Questions

Answer both of the following questions in well-organized essays.

1. Select one of the following quotes, and write an essay that discusses the quote in relation to an important issue in the world today. In your essay, you may incorporate your personal experience and thoughts about how the quote relates to your educational or professional future. (Up to 500 words)

  1. “When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” Malala Yousafzai, Youngest Nobel Prize Laureate and Pakistani activist
  2. “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” Maya Angelou, Poet
  3. “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without government, I would not hesitate to prefer the latter.” Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States
  4. “During our brief stay on planet Earth, we owe ourselves and our descendants the opportunity to explore—in part because it’s fun to do. But there’s a far nobler reason. The day our knowledge of the cosmos ceases to expand, we risk regressing to the childish view that the universe figuratively and literally revolves around us.” Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist

2. After carefully reviewing the Honors website (ship.edu/honors), discuss what specifically interests you about The Wood Honors College. In what ways would membership in the Honors College help you achieve your personal, academic, and/or professional goals? (Up to 250 words)
