Housing calendars are established by the Housing Office based on the academic calendar. These calendars give students notice to hall check-ins, closures, and important break information. Students will receive important closing information and instructions in bulletins at the ship email address closer to closures. Students must request permission to stay during break periods and for early arrivals by posted deadlines. Most sports, band, and other group early arrivals are arranged by coaches and advisors, however, individual request must be requested by the students on the online forms provided. It is important that students prepare in advance for permission to stayover as this can affect meals, card access, and other security issues.

Below is a general outline of housing procedures for the various academic breaks throughout the academic year. Students receive more detailed information with specific dates, times, and deadlines in advance of each of these breaks through multiple email communications
Fall Break
While fall break is an academic break the residence halls do not close for fall break and residents do not have to leave. We ask if students do plan to leave campus for fall break, to please follow the room preparation instructions they received in their email.
Each residence hall will still have resident assistants available on call and at each residence hall front desk from 7pm – 1am daily. Additionally, the Harley Hall and Naugle Hall front desk operate daily from 1pm – 7pm if students need assistance; contact information for those desks are posted at every residence hall front desk. The Office of Housing & Residence Life remains open during business hours the Monday and Tuesday of fall break.
Thanksgiving Break
The residence halls close at 6pm on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Students are expected to arrange transportation to depart campus by this time. Special permission is required to stay past that time or over the break. Students approved to stay over the break will incur a charge of $100 for staying over break. The residence halls closing is not an excuse to miss a Tuesday evening class.
Prior to leaving for break, all residents must complete the room preparation instructions they received in their email.
Routine safety and security inspections of each room will occur after all residents have departed.
Residence halls re-open for students to return at 1pm on the Sunday before classes resume.
Winter Break
The residence halls close at 4pm on the Friday of finals week, however, students are instructed that they need to depart from campus within 24-hours of their last final. Students are expected to arrange transportation to depart campus by this time. Special permission is required to stay past that time or over the break. Students approved to stay over the break will incur a charge of $120 per week that they are approved to stay. Individuals who will be offered housing over the break will be required to consolidate to Mowrey Hall the Sunday after closing; approved individuals will receive separate communication about the consolidation process. Athletic team needs, for those teams staying for competition, are coordinated through the coaches and Athletics department.
All residents must turn in their room key prior to departing from campus. Prior to leaving for break, all residents must complete the room preparation instructions they received in their email. Routine safety and security inspections of each room will occur after all residents have departed.
Facilities staff members will enter all rooms and suites over the break to change air filters on HVAC units, as well as complete any necessary cleaning and repairs in rooms and common spaces.
Students are permitted to return to campus the weekend before classes start for the spring semester; detailed dates, times, and instructions are sent to student’s SU email.
Spring Break

Summer Break
The residence halls close at 4pm on the Friday of finals week, however, students are instructed that they need to depart from campus within 24-hours of their last final. Students are expected to arrange transportation to depart campus by this time.
Prior to moving out, all residents must:
- Put the room in order with all University furniture in proper place.
- Un-bunk bed and/or adjust the bed to a height to move in condition.
- Clean room and floors, remove trash, remove posters, push pins, hooks, etc.
- Clean interior and exterior surfaces of the room door. Remove stickers, double-sided tape and other sticky items applied to the room
- Remove all personal items from their room. The University does not have space for storage of student belongings over the summer months. The University cannot guarantee the security of items left on campus.
- Close and lock windows with blinds down and open.
Residents are responsible for cleaning their own student rooms. Residence hall staff will take photos to document the conditions of each room. These can be used in considering the billable fees for student room damage and uncleanliness.
Residents must check-out of the residence hall only through one of these two methods:
- Checking out with a residence life staff member
- Completing the Express Check-Out process at the residence hall front desk
Full details and instructions on these methods are sent to student’s SU email.
Any resident needing additional time or needing to stay past the posted closing for university related business, graduation, etc. must request approval by filling out the provided request form by the posted deadline; requests made past the deadline will not be considered.
