Scholarship Opportunities for Veterans

When your GI Bill, Federal Aid, and other resources aren't enough to cover the costs of tuition you can always apply for scholarships. In addition to any scholarships you've already earned there are military specific scholarships in our network for which you're encouraged to apply. 

Read more below about each scholarship's eligibility requirements, and any specific application requirements. Please reach out to our office if you need any assistance with the application process.

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Inc.: mcsf.org

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be the son or daughter of one of the following:

  • An active duty or reserve U. S. Marine 
  • A U.S. Marine who has served at least 90 days and has received an honorable discharge, medical discharge, or was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps 
  • An active duty or reserve U.S. Navy Corpsman who is serving, or has served, with the U.S. Marine Corps 
  • A U.S. Navy Corpsman who has served with the U.S. Marine Corps and has received an honorable discharge, medical discharge, or was killed while serving in the U.S. Navy

AND...

  • A high school graduate, or registered as an undergraduate student studying for a first bachelor's degree at an accredited college, or at a post-high school vocational/technical institution (Scholarship awards are not available for graduate study.)
  • The eligible applicant has a maximum family adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less. The limit increases by $10,000 if an applicant's sibling also applies. For the purpose of determining eligibility, non-taxable allowances received by military members on active duty are NOT included in determining adjusted gross income. This income limit requirement is waived for any applicant whose parent was killed in combat in the Global War on Terror.
  • GPA is at least 2.0.

There is limited eligibility for grandchildren.  Proof of membership in one of the qualifying organizations must be submitted.  You must be a grandchild of one of the following:

  • A U.S. Marine who is a member of the Marines' Memorial Association
  • A U.S. Marine who served in the 4th Marine Division during World War II and is/was a member of their association 
  • A U.S. Marine who served in the 5th Marine Division during World War II and is/was a member of their association 
  • A U.S. Marine who served in the 6th Marine Division during World War II and is/was a member of their association 
  • A U.S. Marine who served in the 531 Gray Ghost Squadron and is a member of their association
  • A U.S. Marine who was killed in action in any conflict
  • A U.S. Marine who is a member of the Basic Class 3-56

The Horatio Alger Association seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible applicants to the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship must prove/demonstrate:

  • Service under the United States Military in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning September 11, 2001 or later
  • Honorable service record under the United States Military
  • Critical financial need
  • Intention to pursue a bachelor's degree (BA or BS) at an accredited college or university in the United States (awardees may begin their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)
  • No more than 60 cumulative semester/credit hours by the end of the 2007 term. (Please send transcript to verify credit hours)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

PLEASE NOTE

  • Scholarship recipients will be required to attend school on a full-time basis (24 credits hours per calendar year) in order to receive this scholarship. Individuals who are not planning to attend college on a full-time basis should not apply for this scholarship.
  • Scholarship recipients do not receive direct payment of their scholarship funds. Funds are only disbursed to a student's current school and may only be used for tuition, fees, books, and on-campus housing. Funds may not be used to pay off student loans or credit cards. Army Emergency Relief's MG James Ursano Scholarship Program For Dependent Children of Active, Retired and Deceased Soldiers

Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a private non-profit organization with the primary mission of providing financial assistance to Soldiers and their dependents in time of valid emergency need. The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program was established in 1976 as a secondary mission to help Army Families with undergraduate college expenses for their dependent children. The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program funds are limited therefore scholarship awards are limited.

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program offers scholarships based on financial need, academics, and leadership/achievement for each academic year.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Be full time undergraduate students for the entire academic year at a school accredited by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Be dependents of a Soldier on federal active duty, a retiree, or a deceased active or retired Soldier

To be a dependent you must be:

  • Under the age of 23 for the entire academic year
  • Registered in DEERS
  • Unmarried for the entire academic year

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
The scholarship funds are split evenly between the fall and spring semesters, or terms or quarters. The funds are to be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and school housing and food either on or off campus as requested by the student.
