The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Shippensburg University Financial Aid Office complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The following is a reproduced fact sheet available from the U.S. Department of Education Family Policy Compliance Office.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sets out requirements that are designed to protect the privacy of students and their parents of record. Federal regulations prohibit the disclosure of a student’s financial aid information to anyone other than the student without the student’s written permission except for the parent of a “dependent” student (if that parent provided financial information and his/her social security number on the FAFSA, a campus representative, or other designated officials. The Office of Financial Aid will only disclose information as is allowed by FERPA. We will not disclose a student’s information to a parent (if the student is independent), to a spouse of the student, or any other person unless allowed by FERPA or designated in writing by the student. The Financial Aid Office will never disclose social security number, address, date of birth or alien registration number.
