Administrative permissions on university computers
In order to ensure the security and integrity of university data, employees, students and contractors are not provided with administrative rights on university-owned computer workstations.
For university employees, most business applications and other necessary utilities are available for self-service installation via the Software Center application (Windows) or the Self-Service application (macOS).
Other application installations can be requested by contacting the Technology Help Desk at 717-477-HELP (x4357) or helpdesk@ship.edu.
Admin By Request
Shippensburg University utilizes the Admin By Request utility to manage additional user privileges for power users. Employees who regularly need administrative rights on their computer can request access to Admin By Request by contacting the Help Desk.
Admin By Request automates the process of requesting temporary administrative privileges on a university workstation. The request is sent via the software to the IT department for review, at which time the request is either approved or denied. Since programs and installations running with administrative rights can be dangerous and potentially harm the system, all requests are logged and reviewed.
Using Admin By Request
Admin By Request is installed on a case-by-case basis and must be added to a university workstation by Help Desk staff.
Once you have the software installed, and you run a program that requires administrative rights to the computer, a request prompt will open. You can also access the prompt by right clicking the application and choosing Run as administrator.
In this prompt, you will need to enter and/or confirm your e-mail address and phone number, as well as enter a brief justification for the request. Click OK when finished and a confirmation will appear.
The request to run the program as an administrator will be sent to IT for review. Approval of the request ranges from a few minutes to several hours, depending on when the request was sent and if it is during normal university business hours.
Once the request is approved, you will see a pop-up notification informing you that you may run the program with administrative permission.
Click Yes to run the program immediately.
If you are unable to run the program at the specified time, you can also return later and right-click the program and choose Run as administrator.
When you run the application, you will see the “Code of Conduct” screen. Read the information presented and click on OK to continue running the application.
