Dr. Matthew R.
(re-)joined Shippensburg University in 2013 after serving as a student affairs professional for 12 years in a variety of institutional settings. His previous professional experience includes the community college, for-profit, private, and public higher education sectors.In his work as a faculty member preparing future higher education professionals and clinical counselors, Dr.
relies heavily on Schlossberg’s concept of Mattering and Marginality and Sanford’s theory of Support and Challenge. Self-identifying as a “student affairs and clinical generalist,” Dr. describes his ideal learning environment as a “teaching hospital” where he is able to create learning opportunities and teachable moments for students. He currently coordinates the College Counseling and Student Affairs specializations and the doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision within the department. Dr. is also the Admissions chair for the department and coordinator of New Student Orientation events.An advocate for experiential learning and social justice, Dr.
traveled with the multicultural leadership program Up with People, which allowed him to visit 26 states, Canada, and 14 countries in Europe having stayed with host families and interacting with students from two dozen countries. Most recently, he was selected to attend "A Counselor's View of Italy" where he spent 2.5 weeks in the Tuscany region of Italy engaging in cross-cultural counseling experiences.Dr.
received his B.A. in Psychology as well as his M.S. in Counseling (College Student Personnel) from Shippensburg University where he served as a Residence Director for three years. He completed his Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania and received a post-master's certificate in Clinical Counseling from Messiah University. He is both a National Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as well as a Board Certified Tele-Mental Health Provider (BC-TMH). He is an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) and licensed as a professional counselor (LPC) in the state of PA and a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in the state of MD. Dr. ’s clinical work includes college counseling, in-patient hospitals, and private practice settings. He is certified as a trauma therapist and trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) modalities. Dr. is Past-President of the Pennsylvania College Personnel Association (PCPA). Most recently, Dr. was selected for addition to the Fulbright roster as a Fulbright Specialist (2021-2025).Dr.
has presented at local, regional, and national higher education and student leadership conferences. His research areas of interest focus on multicultural competence and inclusive supervision, student leadership, and well-rounded (holistic) college experiences for students. A number of his scholarly articles have appeared in the Journal of College Student Development, the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, the Journal of Student Affairs, ACPA’s Developments, About Campus, Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly, and other reputable higher education publications. He has been featured on several podcasts including Student Affairs NOW and Authentically Us. He is co-author of “Inclusive Supervision in Student Affairs: A Model for Professional Practice” and co-editor of “Developing Leadership Skills and Abilities for Student Affairs Administrators: ‘Lesson Letters’ to and from our Colleagues." Dr. is an avid distance athlete having competed in numerous triathlons, marathons, half-marathons, mud run obstacle courses, and other distance runs. He resides in Shippensburg with his wife and rescue dog, Foster, and rescue cat, Phoenix.
