Math Placement Levels

Beginning in Spring 2022, Shippensburg University is using ALEKS PPL for Math placement testing. Once you complete an ALEKS placement assessment, you will receive a score between 0 and 100. Based on this score, you will achieve one of six Math Placement Levels.

ALEKS Score: 0 to 25

Placement Level: 1

Students at Level 1 can take either MATH105 – Math for Liberal Studies  to satisfy their Quantitative General Education requirement. MATH100 – Introductory Algebra is for students in majors that require MATH 117 Applied Statistics, MATH140 College Algebra, MATH175 Precalculus, MATH181 Applied Calculus or MATH 211 Calculus.  Students should consult their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

ALEKS Score: 26 to 30

Placement Level: 2

Students at Level 2 can take MATH 105 – Math for Liberal StudiesMATH 107 – Mathematical Models Applied to Money, or MATH 110 – Fundamentals of Mathematics I to satisfy their Quantitative General Education requirement. MATH 100 – Introductory Algebra is for students in majors that require MATH 117 Applied Statistics, MATH 140 College Algebra, MATH 175 Precalculus, MATH 181 Applied Calculus or MATH 211 Calculus.  Students should consult their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

ALEKS Score: 31 to 40

Placement Level: 3

Students at Level 3 can take MATH 105 – Math for Liberal StudiesMATH 107 – Mathematical Models Applied to MoneyMATH 110 – Fundamentals of Mathematics IMATH 117 – Applied StatisticsMATH 100 – Introductory Algebra is for students in majors that require MATH 140 College Algebra, MATH 175 Precalculus, MATH 181 Applied Calculus or MATH 211 Calculus.  Students should consult their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

ALEKS Score: 41 to 57

Placement Level: 4

Students at Level 4 can take any of the Level 3 courses or MATH 140 – College Algebra. Students should consult with their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

ALEKS Score: 58 to 75

Placement Level: 5

Students at Level 5 can take any of the Level 3 & 4 courses. Students at this level can also take MATH 175 – PrecalculusMATH 181 – Applied CalculusMATH 217 – Statistics I, or MATH 225 Discrete Mathematics. Students should consult with their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.

ALEKS Score: 76 to 100

Placement Level: 6

Students at Level 6 can take any of the Level 5 courses (except for MATH 175 - Precalculus). Students at this level can also take MATH 211 – Calculus I. Students should consult with their academic advisor to choose the right course for their program of study.


Students with higher college testing scores (SAT-M and ACT) will be assigned a placement level between Level 4 and Level 6 without having to complete ALEKS first. If a student feels prepared for a higher-level course, they can enroll in ALEKS and attempt to achieve a higher placement level.
