Spanish with Secondary Certification, BA

What Will I Learn?

You will learn interpersonal communication, interpretive listening, interpretive reading as well as oral and written presentations in Spanish. In addition, you will learn about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world including the products, practices and perspectives. Critical thinking, problem solving and cultural awareness are also other student learning outcomes of the program. You would attain an Intermediate-Low level minimum in oral and written skills. In addition, you will demonstrate the knowledge, skills and dispositions to teach Spanish in a K-12 setting according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages standards for the preparation of language teachers.

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with Secondary Certification program prepares you to teach Spanish in grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania, as well as in more than 40 other states with reciprocal agreements.

What Kinds of Experiences Could I Have?

The focus is on oral proficiency. Thus, the program adheres to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards. Our classes are small so we can provide students with a truly one-on-one learning experience.

As you prepare to become a teacher, you will participate in hands-on learning experiences such as:

  • Observation of classes in elementary, secondary and community college settings
  • Observations of physically challenged and exceptional learners
  • Student teaching placements

As you complete the requirements for the Spanish major, you have access to:

  • A multimedia language learning center
  • Communication with native speakers
  • A large collection of literature and media concerning the French language and culture

Study abroad and internship opportunities are also available and look great on your resume.

You may also consider joining the Spanish Club, which allows you to practice the Spanish language and learn about Hispanic culture through trips, events and more. Students may also seek membership in the Spanish honor society, Sigma Delta Pi.
