Heiges Field House Pool

 

The Department of Recreation provides informal recreational opportunities to the campus community throughout the academic year and during several summer months.  Hours are dependent on facility and university scheduling, lifeguard availability, maintenance, and some weather events. Certified lifeguards provided by the Department of Recreation are always on duty during rec swim opportunities.

 

REC SWIM SCHEDULE:

The pool will open Tue 9/2.

Join us for rec swim from 6pm - 9pm on the following dates:

  • GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • The pool is a six-lane, 25-yard facility located on the first floor of Heiges Field House.
  • Individuals are not allowed in the pool area without the presence of a certified lifeguard - as coordinated by the Department of Recreation.
  • Access to the facility is through the main pool door in the lobby. 
  • All individuals are required to visit the check-in table within the pool facility to verify eligibility for access with the department lifeguard.
  • Locker rooms are accessed from the pool deck.  A small number of lockers are available in both the men's natatorium locker room (HFH06) and women's general locker room (HFH 127).  The use of lockers will be available on a daily basis; individuals will need to provide their own lock to secure the space.  The lock and all items within the locker must be removed following each use.

ACCESS INFORMATION:

Individuals eligible for access:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate students and graduate students
  • Currently employed SU Faculty and Staff members
  • SU Alumni as defined by SU Alumni Relations Office
  • SU Retirees as defined by SU Human Resources
  • SU Donors as defined by the SU Foundation
  • SU Trustees

There is no cost for pool use. 

The above individuals may sponsor access for a spouse/partner and/or dependent.  Sponsor must remain on-site during access period.

Dual-enrollment students must be a guest of an eligible adult pool user.

Non-affiliated guests are not permitted access. 

Faculty, staff & students:  Presentation of SU ID is required.  No pre-registration needed. 

Alumni, Retirees, Donors & Trustees:  

  • Facility eligibility verification is required before first use. Must pre-register for eligibility verification prior to first date of membership purchase.  Please submit request using the following link.  Allow 5-7 business days for processing:  REC FACILITY ELIGIBILITY FORM 
  • The SU RecCard entitles the owner to access Heiges Field House swimming pool and outdoor recreational facilities. Outdoor facilities include the Student Recreation Complex (SRC), tennis courts, and Seth Grove Stadium track. The RecCard is not valid for access to ShipRec.  Tennis courts and Seth Grove Stadium track are available for recreational use with SU Rec Card when not in use by varsity athletic practice, special events, maintenance periods, etc.
  • Alumni - A campus parking pass is available for $5 from the department if requested (only alumni not currently enrolled are eligible):  ALUMNI PARKING TAG REQUEST FORM

 


POOL POLICIES:

  • A department lifeguard must be present before entering the water.
  • Lifeguards are the final authority and have the responsibility to enforce policies and remove anyone for unsafe or inappropriate behavior. 
  • Use of campus recreation facilities is voluntary and considered at your own risk.
  • Eligible members are required to present a valid SU ID or department-issued Rec tag.
  • All swimmers must sign in and sign out.
  • Minors must be accompanied by an adult guardian at all times.
  • Children age 10 and under must be supervised by an adult at the facility.  Children under the age of 6 and/or any child that must use a life jacket or flotation device must be accompanied by an adult who is also in the pool. Adult supervision should be supplied for any child over 10 who is not a competent swimmer. Lifeguards have the discretion to require a parent, guardian, or responsible adult (age 18 or over) to be in the water with a child whom they judge as a weak or non-swimmer.
  • Swimmers are encouraged to shower before entering the pool.
  • A small number of lockers are available in both the men’s natatorium locker room (HFH 06) and women’s general locker room (HFH 127). The use of these lockers will be available on a daily basis; individuals will need to provide their own lock to secure the space; the lock and all items within the locker must be removed following each use.
  • Permitted swimwear must be clean, designed specifically for in-water use, and non-restrictive to necessary body movements. Appropriate manufactured swimming apparel is required for all patrons in the pool area. Clothing such as street clothes, street shoes, cut-offs, thongs, and underwear are prohibited. Swimwear should not have been worn for exercising immediately prior to pool use as soiled clothing can create an unhealthy swimming environment.  Large or loose jewelry is not permitted. Lifeguards must approve of any questionable jewelry.
  • No running or horseplay at any time.
  • Diving, entering the water headfirst, is not permitted.
  • No hanging, sitting, or climbing on lane lines.  
  • Starting blocks are for the sole use of the Varsity swim teams and other approved groups with a coach or instructor on deck.
  • Individuals with open wounds and/or band-aids are not permitted in the pool
  • Lap lanes are intended for multiple swimmers. Users should arrange themselves by speed in lanes.  
  • Unauthorized use of facilities for instructing, training, or coaching is prohibited. No outside swim instruction is permitted.
  • No food or beverages permitted. 

Weather Policy:  The National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI) provides recommendations for aquatic safety in the case of lightning. The Shippensburg University Emergency Action Plan for Athletics indoor swimming facility is grounded for protection against lightning, however, all swimmers are removed from the swimming pool if lightning is detected within 8 miles of the pool.  The pool will be closed for 30 minutes after the last strike has been detected within the 8-mile radius.  Pool hours may be impacted as well during storm situations so please call the Rec Hotline to verify hours.  The pool will reopen at the discretion of Campus Recreation staff
