Asian Studies Certificate

12 Credits

For International Studies Majors

Completing the Asian studies certificate provides you with a background in this area of the world and adds an official certificate to your academic transcript.

A required course provides a strong background in international studies. Beyond that, you have flexibility in your choice of several electives that cover various topics related to Asia.

This certificate can be useful for careers concerning Asia. It may suit career paths in international education, business and more.

Studying abroad is an option that provides experience that deepen knowledge of foreign cultures and leads to jobs. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved with groups and events on campus that involve speakers, trips, films and many other activities.

Course Work for the Asian Studies Certificate

Required (3 Credits):

  • INTL 200 - Introduction to International Studies Concepts and Methods or an approved substitute
    Majors, minors, and students adding a Certificate in a second world area must consult with the Director of International Studies to choose an appropriate substitute course and complete an Exception Form.

Electives (9 Credits):
The remaining three courses must concentrate on one world area (Africa & Middle East, Asia, Europe, or Latin America). Two of the elective courses must be at the 300-level or higher.

  • HIST 354 - Traditional China 
  • HIST 355 - History of Modern China 
  • HIST 454 - China and the Outside World 
  • INTL 284 - Selected Topics International Studies Asian Studies 
  • INTL 384 - Selected Topics in International Studies Asian Studies 
  • INTL 394 - International Studies Internship - Asian Studies 
  • PHIL 336 - Concepts in Buddhism 

No courses may be double-counted between a Certificate and the International Studies major or minor, or a second Certificate in another world area. A complete list of approved courses is available on the International Studies website www.ship.edu/ism. Study abroad and advanced language study are strongly encouraged and may satisfy elective credit.

* = Requires an appropriate topic and an Exception Form signed by the Director of International Studies for approval.
