With some exceptions, students who live more than 35 miles from campus are required to live at Shippensburg University their first two years. There are commuter students from as far away as Hagerstown and the Harrisburg area. Many more reside in nearby towns like Chambersburg or even Shippensburg itself. Commuter students can enjoy the Ship experience just like everyone else.
We encourage commuter students to:
- create strong relationships on campus
- use campus resources
- use time wisely between classes
- check your Ship email regularly and connect with the university on social media
- get involved in campus organizations
Getting to Campus for Commuters
Parking on Campus
The vast majority of commuters travel to campus by personal vehicle. Campus is vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian friendly. There is adequate parking that does not required a long walk to your destination.
Vehicles must display a valid parking pass and be parked in designated commuter areas. Information about parking is available through the university police department.
Carpooling
If you are looking to carpool, feel free to post a note on the rideshare board in the Commuter Lounge or use the Pennsylvania Commuter Services website.
Public Transportation
Raider Regional Transit (RRT) is a local bus system serving the Shippensburg University and the Shippensburg community. RRT has local routes and even some regional routes to useful locations in the local area. Ship students can ride RRT for free. You can track the routes of RRT lines on the Transit App.
Commuter Lounge
The lounge in CUB 209 is a great place to hang out when you have down time on campus. There is a kitchenette to store and make food, comfortable furniture, tables, computers, and more.

Shippensburg Community Bus System
Raider Regional Transit (RRT) is a local bus system serving the Shippensburg University and the Shippensburg community. The RRT provides service Monday through Saturday during the university's regular academic year and a Modified Schedule during the summer, fall, spring, and holiday breaks. Service is provided around campus and the Shippensburg community.
Raider Neighbor
Being a member of the Shippensburg University community means that you are neighbors with a variety of individuals; both on and off-campus. Being a Raider Neighbor means that you develop positive relationships with the local community and your on-campus Ship family.
Off-Campus Housing
These independent living/off-campus housing properties are owned and operated by the SU Foundation and offer 24-hour emergency maintenance. The SU Foundation is a separate but affiliated organization.
