History, Comprehensive Social Studies, BSEd

The History/Social Studies (BSEd) program provides a comprehensive academic experience that prepares students to be certified to teach history and social studies in grades 7-12. In addition to completing the requirements for the history major, students take education courses that build the skills to be effective teachers. You will be mentored by engaging history faculty members and educators with K-12 teaching experience.

As you prepare to become a teacher, you will participate in hands-on learning experiences such as:

• Extensive observation of classes in secondary school settings starting sophomore year
• Observation of physically challenged and exceptional learners
• Student teaching placements with direct supervision by history department faculty members

Students who complete their degrees will be certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in social studies, including history, geography, civics, economics, sociology, and psychology in grades 7-12. Many students with this degree also go on to master's programs and beyond.

Our classes are small, and students get to know and work closely with faculty. There are many great opportunities for experiential learning, including internships, studying abroad, research, campus talks and events, and volunteer opportunities.  

The department also has an active History Club to take part in activities and field trips to historical sites, as well as Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. The student-run organization also connects with alumni, allowing you to learn about careers through lectures, workshops, and shared experiences. We also have an active chapter of Pi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, for those who qualify.
