Political and Social Inquiry

The Department of Political and Social Inquiry empowers students to explore how politics, policy, and social forces shape everyday life. Located between Harrisburg and Washington, D.C., it offers unmatched access to government, advocacy, and public-service opportunities. 

The department offers three majors - Political Science, Sociology, and Public Service - and four minors in Political Science, Sociology, Public Health, and Public Service.

It is also home to two graduate programs: the Master of Public Administration and Organizational Leadership and Development.

International Concentration Available

The Political Science (BS) program prepares you for a variety of careers in government and government relations, as well as law or graduate school. The skills obtained in this program prepare you for career growth well beyond an entry-level position.

Sociology, BA
Public Health Concentration Available

Sociology (BA) is the scientific study of human society and social life. The discipline studies the social causes and consequences of human behavior. In more practical language, sociology concerns itself with the institutional patterns of social life and social issues.

Master of Public Administration

The Masters of Public Administration (MPA) program prepares students for careers in public service with local, state, and federal government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Through this program, students develop the knowledge and skills needed to become service-oriented public officials. A large alumni network in nearby Harrisburg provides invaluable networking and career connections.

Organizational Leadership and Development, MS

The Organizational Development and Leadership (ODL) program uses a unique interdisciplinary approach to prepare students for leadership positions in various career fields. Our approach provides a broad understanding of leadership strategies and the operational characteristics and concerns of organizations, while also providing the opportunity to select a concentration area for one’s career goals.

Master of Social Work and Master of Public Administration Dual Degree

The dual degree Master of Social Work (MSW) - Master of Public Administration (MPA) allows students to earn two master’s degrees upon graduation. Select coursework is counted for both degrees, shortening the amount of time it would typically take to earn a second degree. 

The dual degree in MSW-MPA is ideal for social workers interested in management, administration, public policy, or macro social work. The program prepares students for careers in public service with local, state, and federal government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Certificates

Public Management Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Public Management is designed for those interested in pursuing careers in public service and current professionals in the field. The program consists of nine graduate credits, which consist of three courses in human resources, budgeting, and policy analysis.

Academic Clubs and Organizations

Political Science students at Ship have the opportunity to get involved with clubs and organizations to network, pursue leadership positions, boost their resumes, and have fun.

Shippensburg University’s Political Science Club is now the Junior Auxiliary of Pi Sigma Alpha. The club encourages students from all majors to join and engage in the debate about politics and current events. Members of the Club organize and participate in non-partisan political activities, take field trips to Washington, D.C., and become involved in fun events relating to the subject of politics. Joining the club is a great way to meet people, learn about the functions of government, and join in the political process. Pi Sigma Alpha is the national political science honor society. It was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas for the purpose of bringing together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics. Shippensburg University's Theta Gamma Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha was chartered in 1977. The honor society is open to Political Science and Public Administration majors in their junior or senior years of college. Members must have completed 12 hours of political science coursework and have a minimum 3.0 QPA. Pi Sigma Alpha members take part in social and philanthropic activities meant to engage the political science student. Past events include a field trip to New York City to see The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, parties, fundraisers, and more. The Sociology Club encourages casual interaction between students, department professors, and the community. The club provides students with the opportunity to share ideas and express interests that concern society and culture. Interests include homelessness, globalization, environment, local food movement, politics, religious/ racial intolerance, legalization of marijuana, and the need for social change. The club is open to all students.

Alpha Kappa Delta is an international sociology honor society that recognizes sociology majors who have excelled academically. Founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California, Alpha Kappa Delta seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in the scholarship in the study of social problems, sociology, and intellectual activities that lead to the improvement in the human condition.
